Whos got a magnaflow muffler on 2.5 custom tubing?

So just got a 16 st and the previous douchnozzle straight piped it with custom 2.5 job and the drone and volume is head exploding-ly obnoxious. Been watching YouTube vids but we all know there's no representation of in person so I'd like to hear from those who have done.

What model magnaflow did you use, how loud is it and is there any drone?

Id measure your factory muffler location ( out back) and see how big a muffler you can fit. Obviously leave an inch or two for wiggle room. A food back box will do wonders for cutting down the insanity under load. Tone is a matter of preference. Some like a bit buzzy and raspy, others want deep and low loudness.

Just buy the Magnaflow catback. $575 plus the FIST5 coupon on Whoosh Motorsports makes it a perfect exhaust kit. I have it on my car and its perfect. I had an MBRP 3" no muffler system and it was a total nightmare between sound, fitment and drone.

lol even with the bajillion exhaust systems and adjustments I've built/done for the FiST, I'd call the MBRP installation "obnoxious". Do you want to hit the mid chassis brace? Then you can have even tips. Want even tips? Then you're going to hit the mid chassis brace. If I cared about the MBRP system thats on there right now I'd cut off their stupid dual top and go single outlet, then just add on a dual tip after everything's installed.

Just a magnaflow muffler with no middle resonator isn't going to fully mitigate out the obnoxious 106.66hz drone that hurts everyone's ears. The problem with watching youtube videos of exhaust is that it's almost all small on-camera mics or phone mics, which have a frequency range that isn't representative of what your ears hear (or how sound pressure levels at low frequencies *feel*). Personally I have a hard time telling the difference between the thermal and other exhaust systems in youtube videos, but after getting some in-cabin high quality recordings and doing a spectrum analysis the difference was immediately visible.

Why don't you list out your priorities for an exhaust system, and we can make recommendations?
If you're trying to go super-budget, just slapping on a magnaflow will probably lead you to wanting to add a resonator, then even after spending the money for installation of a muffler and a resonator you'll wind up looking at more exhaust systems because of those 106hz pressures. If you just want quiet, see if someone has a stock system or if someone near you is planning to upgrade soon - maybe they'd let their stock one go for a couple hundred bucks. If you want a performance exhaust with no drone, the answer is almost unilaterally thermal (actively engineered to cancel the most obnoxious range), followed by CP-E (just barely misses the mark, resulting in a small amount of drone because their helmholtz chamber is just slightly undersized). I have a hard time telling from the Flowmaster videos posted so far but there isn't the 106hz spike on the spectrum analysis I did - that could mean a couple things:
  1. flowmaster is doing something extra and sneaky to mitigate drone, and actually did analysis and engineering of their FiST system (unlikely but not impossible - at that price point it's most likely a jig-and-weld system)
  2. the person recording the video is using something with mic that doesn't record the 106hz range properly (most likely)
  3. flowmaster's muffler tech does a sufficiently good job of breaking up those low frequencies enough to prevent wave propagation that becomes drone and secondary resonance. (possible but not likely - but I didn't know how to do spectrum analysis back in the day when I used their delta wave tech mufflers and so on, so I admittedly lack the first-hand experience).

If you're looking for a pure-muffler solution, there are a couple vendors that have focused on building quarter-wave tech into their mufflers - billy boat and corsa come to mind - but I have been unable to get responses from either when asking about mufflers and what frequency ranges they actually target. I think Corsa is only interested in selling systems (and the muffler teardowns make the insides look like they're just made of sheet-metal).

The exhaust shop that has fabbed up each revision of my self-made quarter wave resonating stuff accepted my drone mitigation spreadsheet I made for them (as well as a full how-to, from doing a customer ride-along to sample the sound frequencies to calculating the diameter and length of the required chamber) is working on developing some race/track mufflers integrating quarter wave tech, but I *think* they're specifically targeting high frequencies instead of low ones. I'm on their short list of beta testers once they get their development done, but with their use-case, I don't think it'll target the frequencies I want to target.

To be honest, personally, I'd love a 3" system that was near stock quiet but still flowed well, but that 3" diameter coupled with the length of the pipes in our system makes wave propagation an issue. If you added a couple of non-mandrel S bends into a 3" system it'd break up the waves but you'd lose some of the flow of your 3" system. That being said... if a 2.25 pinch-bent stock system is good for a pretty serious amount of HP, then a pinch-bent 3" quiet system should be too - right? I'd like to find a muffler from an M3/corvette/etc. whatever, just a stock muffler from a performance vehicle - that fits in the FiST exhaust well, and build out the piping to match the diameter of that muffler and see what happens.

haha that honestly why I picked an MBRP as my target for "can I eliminate drone on the worst possible Fiesta ST exhaust system" lol. Yes, yes you can, but the price of the MBRP winds up being just about that of the thermal (custom fab work on top of the cost of the MBRP itself).

Have you ever tried running a Greddy Evo or HKS Super Drager canister? I believe they’re quieter than most straight-thru fart cans, almost like a mangaflow/dynomax.

I'll be installing the Flowmaster system just as soon as I get it. I'll be cutting my old exhaust out, but I can ship it in the Flowmaster box if you're interested.

*edit - I just looked up shipping and it's probably prohibitively expensive.

One of these days maybe I'll bite the bullet and try out a varex muffler lol - with the electronic valve inside. From all the videos though, open or closed the varex muffler sounds like buttcheeks.

lol it's a term of general blah I adopted while trying to stop swearing.

I used to have totally clean language all the way until 17 years old, then I worked in an computer repair center between an ex navy, ex army, and ex marine group of older electronics techs. 20 years on and when I am taking electronics apart I still fall back into absolute gutter mouth lol.

Now I swear with letters "holy F this thing is stuck" or if I *have* to say something in frustration I try to use toddler insults. It's so silly that I just avoid doing it - brain hacks!
Also trying to avoid using contractions when speaking - now THAT is tough!

I would have to agree about the MBRP system, it's pretty terrible and the drone it makes will drive you absolutely mentaI. I have driven loud modified cars for years and it was easily rhe loudest I've ever had, and would absolutely cause permanent hearing damage over long periods of time. I added a Vibrant muffler to my MBRP and over the last few months the muffler has broken in and the car is still very loud. I'm going catless in a couple weeks and I probably need to cut out the useless MBRP resonator and add a high quality one in its place. Skip the muffler and add a huge resonator to the system, will tidy up the sound profile for sure.

the problem you’ll find is that the frequency causing the issues has a wavelength of over 10 feet, meaning that to properly cancel it with a traditional resonator it’ll need to be ~10.5 feet long :(

You absolutely don’t need a catless DP for a hybrid turbo. A high flow catted downpipe will be enough.
There are many who run the stock DP with a hybrid and have no issues.

No, it isn’t. A catted DP is perfectly fine for a stock body turbo according to every tuner I’ve spoken to. Nobody claims any gains for a catless over a catted. I don’t think that anyone claims gains with any DP over a stock DP with a stock body turbo. A catless DP is only good for making more noise and dumping unburned gas out the back.

Nobody is telling you what to run on your car. We’re just saying that you’re incorrect about any DP being a supporting mod for a hybrid. Save your money for a mod that makes a difference.
