I plan on getting another set of tires for the winter anyway, so I wouldn't get all season tires. I was looking summer performance tires after the stock ones wear out. I was going to go up to 215 because the roads in DC are terrible and would like a better ride, and I heard going up to 215 would do so. I was thinking 215/45 for next set of summer tires.

don't go up to a 45 series...215/40 will still offer a better ride without being too much larger (diameter) than stock. I rub even at 205/50-16 on stock suspension, and that's only about 3.5% larger diameter than stock. 215/45-17 is about 4.7% AND wider, so you're asking for trouble.

Just to show you how opinions differ, I'm gonna take a different tack than justgot did: instead of 215/40, I'd go with 205/45. The higher sidewall will give greater flex and thus a better ride over rough roads. (Exemplified by the 65 sidewalls of my winter tires--they've actually got a very good ride feel.) Certainly, if you're going to do the summer/winter rotation, you've got lots of options, though. I agree with avoiding going both wider and taller--that's a quick route to Rub City. Er, wait, that didn't sound right....

[Note: I have heard of some folks running 215/45 successfully, however not much beyond that.]

So if I wanted a better ride and better performance should i go 215/40 or go 205/45? Or am I asking too much? Ha.

A 215/40 is naturally a little thicker then a 205 since its wider. Honestly I would go 215 and keep the height the same.

Nexens are garbage, agreed.

But considering I'm at 12,000km and stock RE050's are already at wear bar, I rather pay cheaper just so I can wheelspin and not care (as much) about burning money.

Smoky wheelspin is always fun [burnout]

We are completely on the same page, that's why my other wheelset it 205/50-16! I just didn't want to see someone get 215/45 and wreck their fenders!

Sidewall heights:

215*.4=86mm
205*.45=92.25mm
OEM
205*.4=82mm

I would personally choose the 215/40 as it will give you better performance and still be more comfortable than OEM.

Yeah the main reason I went with the 45's is because 215 or 225 40 or 35 series were all outside my budget and the RE050's were donezo. 205-40-17 and 215-45-zr17 are simply the most readily available options. Price was a major concern and the difference between 215-45 and 215-40 / 225-40 /215-35/225-35 was a few hundred dollars.

I haven't wrecked my fenders though everyone is under the impression I'm lowered as a result. I get some rub ONLY when going up a driveway faster than I should've been going anyways. The roads around here suck and are falling apart.

If you can afford the proper size, do it. Again, check your fitment on willtheyfit.com - that's what I did first to be sure it'd even work. It did, so I proceeded. Fitment is going to be subjective but these were my findings. If you're slammed already, I would not suggest my current tire fitment. Stock ride height is mostly fine though. As with anything subjective like preference for ride quality, YMMV (your mileage may vary)

oh and my RE040s were done before 14000 miles.

Jesus what were you doing? I got 15k out of my Advan A048 on my evo and they were soft! Tirerack has some pretty good deal on 215/40 but then again idk your budget.

20k is all my stockers were going to make it before tire damage took two of them out anyway. Still running the stock rear tires since they don't get too punished.

My 235/40-17's are awesome for $76 per tire, but they do have some draw backs. Forward traction is GREATLY INCREASED.

My budget was $300/set lol

I think that might've had something the tires getting chirped most of the time coming out of 1st whether or not i wanted to.. My commute is also 100% street on a 50-60mph speed limit road with lots of long sweepers probably contributed to it as well.
The rears still had maybe 50% left but the fronts were done, and I dislike mixing sets. So I replaced all four.

My fronts were at wear bar after 10,000 km. RE050's have really shitty treadwear.

My FiST is coming up on 29k miles and I'm still on the factory RE050 tires. Granted they're probably 2/32 now and I wouldn't trust them to be safe in the heavy rain. I'm surprised at the mileage we got from them considering my wife and I are avid autox'ers (different competition vehicles but we have fun on the street). I've just been on the fence about which tire to go with next. I'd love to step up to a 215 bit that requires going to a 45 profile (to have decent tire choices) which bumps inaccuracy up to 4mph difference at 70 mph.
