1) It's nice that you don't have to downshift to overtake.
2) If they're already going faster I'd just get over and let them by (before they have to slow down); then get back over behind them.

But yeah, sometimes you have the occasional individual that's seemingly in a rush until you let them around. They haul-ash where they can't see down the road and slow down where they can... really ssa-sdrawkcab...

For some reason in my area, it's always the newer Subarus and Bro-dozers that have to do the revving near me. It's funny though when they think they can just blow me away and then they hear the Turbo spool and Blow off valve after I destroy them.
It seems my car has made a reputation because in the various places I have worked I have always had people coming in and asking me about my car. Usually it's the Gaurds at the gate on the military installation that ask questions.

It's gotta be the stickers lol.

It's not the boy racers that seem bothered by my car around here, it's the Bro Dozers. I have a theory though. To the non car crowd, our cars have a remarkably similar shape to a Prius C with a body kit. Nothing offends those morons more than the thought of being passed by a Prius. They always seem willing to drive completely reckless just for the chance to get back in front of me and "roll coal." It's happened to me three times in the month since I bought my ST, and never once before in my twenty years of driving.
If I had my windows down and someone rolled coal at me I think I would follow them....

Definition:
roll coal. the act of rollin' coal. When you have a tune on your diesel truck or have turned up the injection pump and you mash the throttle overfueling the engine until the turbo spools up, producing a large cloud of thick black smoke.
I've seen diesels do that before but I had no idea that there was any sort of intent behind it LoL. I just thought it was something diesels did when stomped-on.

Nope, it's purposely burning too much fuel and messing up your performance for the sake of "rollin coal".

Done purely to act childish, on pretty much anything smaller than a dump truck. It's the equivalent of putting a fart can on one of our cars.

Devil's Advocate:
Remember that they probably get similar treatment. Many assume that a small car is going to be slow. How do people perceive trucks?

Also, on take-offs, automatics tend to have a smooth acceleration curve. Depending on the person doing the shifting, manuals can have a "spurty" and even quirky acceleration curve. If the autotrans is on mantran's bumper, that can be a little annoying. if they've spent the day driving behind other left-lane "slow pokes" (it's all relative) who are perfectly happy missing green lights, that can serve as a tipping point.

My point is, when someone is seemingly acting stupid, it's usually over a misunderstanding. Give them the benefit of the doubt. If said individual wants to get around, let them. Not a big deal. If someone simply wants to yank your chain, don't give'm the satisfaction of an acknowledgement or response.

EDIT: Re 2nd paragraph BTW, especially before becoming 99% with the 2-3 shift, I intentionally look to create extra bumper space during 1st and 2nd gears.

We had the coal burner problem in Morgan Utah back around 2000, it got pretty bad for awhile. One dusted my son when he was walking to the store then yelled some obscenities at him, he waved and called them to come and talk about it, they speed off, he would of kicked their butts if they tried anything as he is uncommonly tough. I went looking for them and to talk to the Sherriff about it as had seen quite a few of that stuff happening over the past few weeks but somebody must of beat me to it as it all stopped, completely, that day.

I am on my third Duramax, first two were tuned and quite quick but never had much smoke out the back as turned for performance and efficiency and ran as clean as we could make them, not to make an ass out of myself. Third one is stock, 2012, to costly to give up the warranty as they can tell if tuned now and it pulls our fully loaded, with ST in the back, 43' toyhauler up anything just fine. I can have it warming up while hooking up the trailer and no smell a thing.

AND, there is only so much abuse the earth can take before she has to shake us off like a pack of flees, my car has a $500 cat on the DP because it should;)

Back on topic, I get a lot of attention, more than wanted or expected, Hot August Nights will be soon and many hot rods, etc...are starting to show up crusing around, I have had a chat with a few owners, thumbs up, etc....the FiST seems to be rather well known even by that crowd.

By far, the funniest ST encounter I've had was at a gas station with an owner of a new Escape. He really liked the way the car looked but heard they were slow. He was pretty sure his Escape could probably outrun one in a straight line, because his Escape was "quicker than you'd think, because it's the turbo one." I just smiled and said, "yeah, it'd be awesome to take an engine like that and put it in this car." He didn't get the joke, so I had to explain it. That led to him poking around the car for a good twenty minutes while asking a billion questions. I'm guessing he buys an ST.

I don't know about a reputation, But... Quite a few people seem to get crazy after they've "been had". After I've show a few my tail lights, going only slightly more than "reasonable and proper" on the streets, then letting off before things got wild.. they seem to do absurd stuff, crazy speeds, odd lane changes to go around, etc.. anyone else noticing "sore losers"?

That's a term I hadn't heard before. My most recent tho was a pick-up truck. Chrome wheels, loud pipes.. .. I was in the left lane, he went around in the right lane, then cut across to get to the left turn lane. When the light changed he stomped it into the turn. Moron. The one before that on the same day was a Subbie. He revved at the light. I looked straight ahead, no reacting, but when the light changed, I cut it properly. watching in my side mirror, he started to get on it enough for what he thought would be enough to pull ahead, and I squeezed the trigger enough to maintain my edge, but no more. As he squeezed harder, so did I keeping just ahead. Just as we were starting to exceed the legal limit on the road, I let off and he mashed down. He did his fly by then cut into my lane. His WAS a faster car, and in a straight up launch he should have eaten my lunch, but I caught him unaware, and unknowing.

I think the reason our cars are getting a "name" is because 90% of people on the road see their car as a box that takes them from A to B. They don't know cars and they don't really care, us car people are a vast minority and takes someone who knows cars to actually see this isn't just some econobox. I finally went to the canyons around Malibu, and driving there was irritating because damn near every person sped up when I passed them. Nobody in their Merc or BMW or whatever wants to be passed by a grey little fiesta.

I had this one Prius who kept blocking me every time I went to pass him. I did the only reasonable think I could, I dropped it 2 gears got right in the boost and made sure I passed him as loudly as I could.

I notice the Prius drivers speeding up on the freeway. I'll generally set my cruise (this is the first car I've had with cruise control. I never thought I would want or use it, but things change with age) at only about two or three mph over the limit, say 73 mph and happily putter along. (but if I see I'm going to be impeded, and reading the flow I can tell that punching it will clear me, I'm not averse to punching it up to 90/95/100+). I'll gradually approach a Prius, who is in the middle lane, me staying clear of traffic going up the right lane unimpeded. As I get to it, it will speed up, it not wanting to be passed by me in the slow lane. .. fine. fine. I only want to be going so fast anyway.. .. UNTIL.. it develops that we approach another vehicle in the slow lane and it looks like I'm going to be "boxed"... You all know the rest of the story.

I just moved to California from NY, I just wish people would stay THE FUCK OUT OF THE LEFT LANE. No one here seems to obey that rule...or use turn signals...or have brake lights... But I don't want to rant about that right now.

I will say this: I have at least found a few self aware Prius drivers:

sorry.. I meant to say I was in the slow lane driving along.. I'm right/left challenged... But... I've driven L.A. freeway and around California and also lived and driven in New York for four years. The rules are different, tho the laws are the same. It'll take you some time to figure out how to flow in California, but the traffic (unless in a jamb) will flow along quite nicely even if it is heavy. Don't hesitate. Signal, move. See an opening? Take it. You'll be accommodated. It all happens much faster in Ca.

I think our little cars are getting a small name going. Ever since the Focus RS has been coming out, there's been some focus on fords lately. Most of the time when people see a ST badge they automatically think its a focus. When I mention its actually a fiesta then they get to gawking around...along with the "Is it fast?!" question. Which is my opinion, it's definitely not since mine is stock, for now, but it sure is a blast to drive... and to say I get revved at by all the "boy" racers and their civics is a understatement. Seems everyone wants to race this thing when they see the badging. There's not too many Fiesta St's I've seen rolling around that i've seen but soon as I mention it, curiosity fills and they must ask alot of questions. So while it might not be a big name per say....it's definitely growing from unknown to underdog around my area. Everyone I've taken for a ride says if they could redo a purchase, they'd definitely look into buying one.
