I know the carbon build up topic seems to have been beaten to death lately, but I haven't seen anyone mention BG Products. My good friend is a tech at Mercedes who also recently picked up a DIT car (2015 WRX). He's been showing me some very intriguing results that BG has had on their Taurus SHO.

I know the Ford tech from the YouTube videos says there are currently NO chemical options to treat carbon build up, so I figured I would throw this into to mix and get people's opinions.

I have used 44K in the past - it did help my gas mileage some. I've heard of folks having success with MOA as well, but I have never used that personally. When I worked at NAPA I used to sling this stuff like candy. I would sell multiple cans of BG every single day to gearheads and shops.

I've used the 44k for intervals between 5 and 15k for 16 years now. I've also seen it clear up clogged injector issues as well as fuel tank sludge. I would not use the MOA in a GDI car due to its high calcium and the identification of calcium as being a major part of the valve and combustion chamber deposits in GDI.

The direct injection product doesn't look like a preventative maintenance product, it looks like it's a product you use when it's too late.

I also keep reading that fuel system additives with Techron work very well in keeping the carbon down. The best thing to do is use a high quality gasoline and low volatility oil to keep it from happening in the first place. The Techron stuff just makes extra sure.

I used to use this on my 2000 VW Golf TDI. I purchased the car in 2008 on a recommendation from my friend, a mechanic at a local VW dealership. They put this product in on all 30K services. I loved the stuff. Plus, only $20 at Amazon with Prime shipping! - http://www.amazon.com/BG-44K-BG44K/dp/B00ER8HDRE

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on its use with the FiST.

Makes me chuckle that even 44K is on sale on Amazon Prime now. [wrenchin]

That is the currently popular thought regarding low volatility oil, but I have read one paper which I posted in the sticky that says high volatility is better. Food for thought.

I think I read the same, but I believe it said higher volatility and lower molecular mass of the base oil. If I had to interpret that statement it would be something along the lines of low volatility high molecular mass base oils are "heavy and sticky" while hier volatility low molecular mass base oils are "lighter and stays vaporized". I forget which engine they used for the study though.

Yeah, I read it as both too and gather that superior functionality as you stated it. . So, higher NOAK and lower specific gravity.

I think the test engines were low displacement TGDI Merc's.

BG recommends it with TDI every 15 thousand to keep build up down so it can be preventive and for when its too late. Im just over 12000 miles when i get to 15000 ill do the service and report back.

I used BG products for carbon cleaning MANY times when I was at an independent shop. They always worked extremely well, and will be the product I personally use for my FiST.

Yea, the guys that use it at the turbo shop say, "what ever is in that $hit, I don't know, but as long as the engine is hot, it works amazing".
I personally can't say I've used it.

I was a VW tech many years ago, and we used to put in 44k at certain service intervals. I have first hand seen 44k clear up random misfires and injector issues. It isn't a gimmick product. Some of the other BG stuff is gimmicky, like the Throttle Body service kit, if they even sell that stuff anymore. The service advisors used to sell them to customers ALL THE TIME. It was basically a can of BG branded gum cutter.

I don't know about in our cars. There wasn't any GDI stuff then. FordtechMakoluko on youtube does recommend the Chevron with Techron as someone else previously stated. I'm sure when something "Ford Approved" is released, we will hear it from him. He's a good resource for gasoline stuff. There's many good Ford Diesel techs on there I follow also, but that's because I get stuck with a lot of Powerstroke work. lol.

On par with the Techron is the Gumout All In One or Multi System product. From the Q&A they did on BITOG awhile back it may be reasonable that their PEA content is higher than that of the Chevron Techron product when looking at dosing. Redline SL1 is also known for its PEA content being quite high and if purchased in large enough quantity costs about the same as the Gumout and less than the Chevron.

All that said the BG44K would be my first to trust option for maintenance dosing.

I've considered the induction service for 15 or 30K maintenance, but having had 3 DI cars now that have had no issues makes me less concerned.
