Coolant overflow or no?

So I was changing out my reservoir and this piece broke. From everything I’ve seen I understand that after time heat makes this piece brittle and it’s inevitable that this will break at some point. I’ve also seen there an upgrade/replacement for this part (C1BZ-8B081-J)

Yes it will be replaced/repaired

My main concern is can someone explain the importance of this piece to me. How necessary is this component. I’m still learning and I just want to have a discussion about it so I can learn and try to be self sufficient.

It looks like the hose that broke is actually the upper (plastic) one which is a coolant return line from the back of the cylinder head

Judging by how yellowed your coolant reservoir tank, if you’re replacing that line, it might be worth replacing the reservoir and the lower (rubber) return hose from the front of the engine as well.

Both of those lines make sure that coolant and any air bubbles that rise to the top of the engine coolant system get flushed into the reservoir and separated so that only coolant without air goes back into the system through bigger third rubber hose at the bottom of that plastic tank, which was originally milky white, not yellow!

The hose is important because it helps remove air and any other gas bubbles from the coolant system, so they don’t get trapped in the engine and cause it to overheat in spots because the gas bubbles push coolant away from the hot metal surfaces that we want to keep cooled


You can get the whole kit here unless you’re having a dealer or mechanic get the parts for you. (Or it sounds like maybe you have the parts already?) You’ll probably need to bleed the coolant system after replacing those hoses and reservoir

Thank you for replying, the reservoir is what I was changing as it developed a pinhole leak at the seam on the sides. While in the process the clamp is what broke.
