GT2860R vs GT2860RS questions

I have a Fiesta ST with either the GT2860R or RS version and can't tell the difference. The turbo label was removed before i bought the turbo and at this point the cartridge is bad and in need of replacement. The rotors are very worn from rubbing so I don't think measuring the diameter of the rotors will be accurate . Is there a way for me to easily differentiate between the two?

Also, if I wanted to just upgrade my Gen 1 to a Gen 2 while I'm at it, could I just get the Supercore, Garrett, Gen2 GTX2860R, and call it a day, or is it specific to either the R or RS, and not the other? Thanks

I heard back from ATP and it's an RS version. Now I've got to decide if it's work an extra $600 to upgrade to the GTX2860R versus keeping it a GT2860RS. I know it's old, but with the WGA and BP Racing manifold it was spooling around 3,900-4K RPM's and I really don't need anymore power.

What's the total cost for turbo rebuild and the cost for the turbo upgrade?

Rebuild is $750 + tax and GTX Supercore is $1,350 + tax.
I just sold a lightly used GTX2860 Gen 2 (<15K miles on it) for $1550. Getting another turbo may be the better route. You would have to retune on the Gen 2 anyway, so you are likely out $400 on the custom tune.

Have you ever driven a stock turbo fiesta? Curious if you have ever experienced the low end torque that you are missing with this turbo. I moved from the Gen2 to the S280 because the Gen2 spooled too slow for me (ATP kit + ported OEM exhaust manifold). Just some food for thought considering you could probably walk away from your damaged turbo and invest in the S280 and it would cost only $200 more compared to repairing yours with the GTX supercore.

According to the Whoosh website the S280 is spooling at 3,700, so is that really an upgrade over the Gen 2 considering the Garrett's power potential? What did your Gen 2 spool at? I guess if you're not planning to go Aux fuel or meth the S280 would be much more fun spooling quicker.

s280 is at full boost at 3.1k rpm in 4th gear. My Gen 2 wasn't there until 4.1k rpm. It's a massive difference. Take a look through this thread: https://www.fiestastforum.com/threa...t-dyno-virtual-dyno-and-datalog-thread.22987/

All of us have our vdynos posted.
What #'s are you seeing with stock 93 fueling? I've been on the thread and will take a look again now, but when I was on there earlier today it seemed the only person making numbers in the 300's had aux fuel.

The S280 looks to be a great turbo, but I'm just going to replace the cartridge in the disco potato and call it a day. Thanks for the recommendation and if I keep the car another year I might give the S280 a shot.

By the way, with proper fueling can I see 360whp on the GT2860RS? This would effectively max out the LPFP from what I've read as it's supposedly good for 400hp. I plan to run the Whoosh single port aux fuel kit for some more safety and fun. Thanks

I’d say you could get to that power level on that turbo, yes.

I highly doubt you will make that with a disco potatoe even with aux and ethanol. It's old tech. People didnt even make that with a gen 1 gtx2860r.

What was the size of the housing on the hot side of the turbo as this makes a difference how the 2860 spools up?
It was the standard .64 a/r hotside that comes with the gtx2860 gen2 in all the fiesta kits.
