Additionally, the GTI is probably more comfortable and the DSG is dreamy. Downside, you have to deal with VW Dealers and Service and pathetic, expensive aftermarket support (coming from a until-recently-lifelong-vw-enthusiast)

I currently have a GLI 290,000 miles. Timing chain tensioner failed at 140,000. $4400 to fix the top half of engine. I'm passing on the VW at this time. Thanks though. In all fairness the GLI has been a fun car, love the fender audio!!

And my 1999 Passat 1.8T experienced the dreaded "oil sludge issue" but at a whopping 260k miles ($800 oil pump, incl. labor). Any car past 100k miles (except a well-maintained, and expensively maintained VWAG product I might argue) and we are all living on borrowed time w.r.t. major repairs.

I'm not trying to debate VW vs other brand longevity/reliability/quality. If you don't want a VW this time around, I don't blame you. I am personally disgusted by the Dieselgate scandal and this is the only reason I am not in the 2016 GTI S 6MT PP LP I had on order last year, at this very moment.

My only point: the new GTI is a viable, more-comfortable, and in many ways better alternative to the Focus ST.

I personally think that it is a better looking car than the FiST (besides being more in line with your wants and needs), but it too could stand a 3 door, shorter wheelbase version, just as I think the FiST could.

That last gen, Euro/Brit only, 3 door, RS500 version was BADASS looking, and not too shabby performance wise either!

for as much driving as OP says he does, I would get the FOST. The stiff ride of the FiST would drive me nuts for 40k miles a year.

Looks like you went with the Focus. I think they're both good. I looked @ both the Fist & Fost. But I already sort of had my mind set on the Fist being that I traded a 2011 fiesta se sedan. Kind of like going from the Wii to the WII U. It just seemed right at the time. Enjoy it !

Coming from an svt focus I liked how the fist was more similar to it in both size and weight and I also like how the fist is more uncommon. I live in a smaller population area and in my entire county and surrounding counties around me I've been I have seen a small handful of fost but not seen one other fist outside of my own and I like it that way....
