I had the same basic set up I used on multiple cars over the years. Just needed to order new feet and make a few adjustments depending what vehicle they were mounted on. I started to hate the set up, was ok for short hops, but all day trips were not fun. Gas mileage plumetted, car was sluggish in performance. The aero's being worse than a semi trailer I am sure.

If you don't have a second vehicle, better than nothing.

Now I check to see if I can rent a bike at my destination or with careful packing, can get 2 bikes into my VW Golf wagon, as long as i don't need space for more than 2 people.

I went with the hitch and hitch cradle and it cost me $244 total.

Curt hitch was $114 and the Swagman bike rack $130.

Yup. I'm switching to a hitch setup soon. I've been hesitating because of the stock exhaust banging issues. I have a set off Cobb hangers that will hopefully take care of that.
It'll be so much easier to just unhitch the rack instead of taking the whole roof setup off. I don't want to keep the cross bars on all the time . I'll keep my thule setup if I ever need to get a cargo box or tray.

I have the MBRP exhaust which doesn't have a muffler out back, just pipe. Maybe that's why I've had no banging issues.

My reasoning was that for the 90% of the time I drive my car and I'm not biking, there's literally only some added weight out back. Even when I'm commuting to the trails with the bike on the back it's in the draft zone mostly so mileage doesn't take noticeable hit there either.

It takes about 1 minute (I timed it) to fold, remove and place my hitch rack in the shed when I'm done cycling for the day.

That's why I went with the hitch. Curious, why did you say your searches were "fruitless"?
Because I am not interested in modifying the exhaust system to mount a trailer hitch. The roof system requires absolutely no modification whatsoever to be performed to the car.

I should have prefaced this by saying I do make my living in the cycling industry, and the rack is used quite often. The cheaper trailer hitch carriers are also frame contact, which is a no-no.

Here's a picture with my XC Hardtail and my new Trail Rig! I love Bike Thread!

If you have a carbon frame I can see that being an issue.

Sometimes carbon, sometimes titanium, sometimes aluminum, sometimes steel... but most times belonging to the companies that manufacture them.

Ahh. I keep a microfiber cloth in my car in case my frame isn't clean enough to use the frame clamp. I'm hydroformed Al though.

ODI Rogue grips, i notice.. my personal choice for XC. Think I'm going to do Easton grips for FR this year. I hate a skinny grip. My hands get really cramped.

Can you fit the bike in the ass of the car with seats down and front tire removed?

I am in this dilema right now as to transport my bike in the FiST. On my previous vechicle it was easy to slide in the back with the front tire removed.

Shouldn't be a problem fitting it in but you might need to remove the rear trunk cover as it might be jn the way.

I personally don't like putting my bike inside as my bikes front breaks are annoying and I have to re-tune it everytime I take the front wheels off. Also from pass experience (in my previous Mazda 2) I always scratch the plastic and leave tire marks on the roof inside the car.
so I decided instead of dealkng wwith that hassle, a bike rack will be better :)

Why not use a tow hitch instead?

Mostly two reasons

1. My brother already convinced me to buy the racks -_- I tired to sell them but couldnt bare to lose so much money on it
2. Through the research, I have no plans on getting a new exhaust any time soon and j don't want to hear any banging noise if I drive on roads that's a little bumpy and such....

So I decided to just stick with the racks :p

I went with a hitch mount because I didn't want the eyesore and drag of the roof racks. You can't even tell there's a hitch under there with no rack installed...
