First of..... Ford Sucks for riveting these on the cars. Here in Arizona we don't have to have front plates and its absolutely ridiculous to have to drill out the bumper to get a license plate holder removed.
Anyway, I bought Dorman part number 45811 for about 2$ at Carquest. You can buy them online or any mainstream auto parts store. Dorman is sold by all of them, and most have them in stock ready to go. They also come as a 2 pack so you only need 1 to complete this job. The other thing you need is some touch up paint FORD # PMPC-19500-7236A (is the specific # for Race Red you can look up for your own car or just call ford and they can get it for you) Cost $15.51.
I know bumperplugs.com makes these, and its probably a good option but I didn't want to pay 40$ to get them shipped to me when I can make them for half the price.
I have no experience in automotive paint but I didn't want to pay someone to do this either, so here it goes.
Step 1 Drill out holes with a 1/4" drill... be careful not to overheat the bumper have someone with you to spray water to keep it cool.
Step 2 Package removal: Unless the box they came in is really dirty or opened I didn't bother to clean the clips as my box was unopened and clean.
Step 3 get a small cardboard box (like a oil filter box is what I used) poke 2 small holes a couple inches apart and stick the plastic clips from the box in them.
Step 4 Shake for a few minutes, then open the MotorCraft touch up paint and apply your first coat, I waited about 15 minutes before applying another coat. I only did 2 coats. Make sure you get the edges covered because you don't want any black to show.
Step 5 Wait 30 minutes and on the other side of the touch up paint is the "clear coat" its on a little foam brush deal, I did just 2 coats about a few minutes apart. Then let it sit for another 30 minutes to dry.
Step 6 One My holes were a little bigger than the other, one hole fit great the other not so much so I dabbed some silicone (Ultra Black) (very small amounts only in the very center around the base of the fastener. and put them in, held in place for 10 seconds and done.
Up close it still looks good, from 10 feet away you can't even tell there is something there pretty much unless your really looking for it.
Anyways Have a nice day!
