residue / crud near above trans fill hole

was doing oil change today and noticed a good amount of crud located specifically about 4-6 inches lower and slightly to the right/driver side of where my shift adaptor is or if underneath a couple of inches above the fill hole. I wiped it away and it was pretty black just wondering if it was crud and dirty, or is there anything in that region of the trans that may possibly leak?? the weird thing is that the crud was only in that area of the trans the rest looked pretty clean.

could be from the gearbox breather.
