S280.V.S whoosh hybrid

I’m in a predicament of what kind of turbo to go with I’m only looking to stick with stock fueling and stock block and internals but I just want that extra umhp my HP # and tourqe # is roughly like 230-250 hp and subs 300 tourqe I’ve got 72k miles and just want a reliable safe place to have fun I’ve got the intake and inner cooler set up so what would y’all recommend I do like the quick hit of power from the stock turbo but I do really wish I had more of a power band than only having 3 seconds of fun

2. We generally don’t shit on forum noobs here, so disregard #1.

Both are great options and you really can’t go wrong either way. The hybrid is a totally stock housing, so you won’t need to modify anything whatsoever to make it fit. The S280 has a much larger compressor housing which requires breaking out the angle grinder on the back of the block to make space. Reaching it is the hardest part, but once you’ve got yourself laid across the top of your engine with grinder in hand, it takes about 10 minutes to do the grinding including a few test fittings to make sure the clearance is good. Hybrid will have essentially the same powerband as stock turbo, just a lot more of it. S280 shifts the powerband up a bit. It still spools plenty early and pulls until you bounce the rev limiter which is why it’s by far the most popular turbo for our cars. I just removed a turbo kit that cost me over $6k to put an S280 on. lol

Thanks for the insight I feel like the longevity would be better with a S280 and a medium to aggressive tune with it than a hybrid that’s try hard to push it power but I’m not well traversed in aftermarket turbos

The most reliable stock location/fitting turbo is going to be a Garrett kit such as the GTX2860, but they’re a little more expensive because to do it right you also need a new exhaust manifold as well. They’re also the total opposite of a hybrid in the sense that they have no power at all below 4,000 rpm and aren’t really cooking until 4,500. Once it spools up though, it’s a riot and makes you want to bounce the limiter every shift. This is a somewhat controversial opinion, but Garrett makes OEM quality and uses ball bearings. S280 is hand made in England, which isn’t typically synonymous with high quality, but I’m obviously talking out of both sides of my mouth because I’m removing a Garrett to put an S280. The Garrett is awesome on the street where I can always control where I am in the rev range but on the track it’s a pain in the ass, hence the swap for a broader powerband.

Also, if you stick with a reputable tuner from this forum they won’t let you do anything wild that’ll blow your engine up regardless of which turbo you go with. Unless you ask them to push it to the ragged edge, they’ll keep it safe.

Thank you for all this information I think ima go with the s280 turbo I’ve got the dizzy tune on my car and will probably go with him for the s280 but is there any other reputable tuners out there ?

Jason is great and tunes a lot of S280s. Westley at Phul Performance is now partnered with EMS who is probably the biggest ecoboost tuner in the nation. I am tuning with him now and love his work. Jason tuned it before him and I was very happy with his work as well. Stratified, Monster tuned, tunewerks, and JST are also good.

based on your post a hybrid turbo is what you're looking for i.e. quick spool and stock fuel system

regardless of other posts that don't explain that 99+% of turbo upgrade customers in the USA are either on a hybrid or S280
and from someone that has been selling turbos to this community for over 8 years, it's a fact that you will no longer enjoy driving your ST if you install a Garrett , Xona, or other "big" turbo
slow spool and no fun unless you're wanting to move your powerband up near redline. To add your ST will not only be slow spooling but on the stock fuel system also maxed out on power at under 300whp just like the quick spool options
