Stock 6K682 turbo rebuild, diag and information? Help.

Hi Guys,

Orignial symptom:
Clattering sound

In neutral
-only occurs when clutch depressed, disappears when clutch released
In gear
-only occurs when clutch depressed, disappears when clutch released i.e. engine is under load

No other symptoms or sounds.

While chasing down this issue and tearing out the trans, I noticed a ton of Schmoo on what I think is the hot side of the turbo. I am a total novice when it comes to turbos and this turbo in particular seems mysterious. I have done a fair amount of googling and can find little information on how to rebuild it, where to find bearings (and or anything else I might need).

I can only seem to find it listed as a complete assembly from Ford:

I absolutely do not have the budget for an after market turbo.

If you want another stock Turbo....you can get another used turbo for under $300. When you factor in balancing....parts etc. It almost comes out to be the same. Or if you wanna and can get fancy now would be the time for a Turbo upgrade and tune. Of course if you have an AP3 though and an upgraded intercooler at the least .....or you would need to get them also. If I had the money and was in your shoes I'd get it all from whoosh...maybe he could build you a package deal....all you would need to do is contact Ron@whoosh. Good luck!

Or if you wanna and can get fancy now would be the time for a Turbo upgrade and tune. Of course if you have an AP3 though and an upgraded intercooler at the least .....or you would need to get them also. I don't mind tearing it down again to upgrade it later, but at the moment, an $1800 outlay, plus any unforeseen complications on my DD are vastly outside the scope and purpose of this job.

Do you have any other resources explaining turbo maintenance? I wasn't aware they required balancing (although it makes sense).
