Sync screen

I've been seeing it for 3 years and have no idea what it is. I'm referring to the envelope symbol at the bottom of the sync screen. I thought it might be to read an email, as per texts, but having received numerous emails on my phone, nothing! Any ideas?

Envelope icon indicates unread text messages according to above link.

My unread text messages envelope is at the top right corner of the screen. If I touch it, it lists the emails

On my Sync 3, after I see the envelope email icon, I press the talk button on the steering wheel and say read mail or read email, and the system reads it out loud.
