Take it from me, mine broke off. It's not really needed unless you experience a lot of dirt under the hood. Either way you could just tape it off it's not under any pressure.

Not exactly. The fluid inside gets hot and cold. The breather vent allows the hot expanded air to escape the transmission and allows the cool air in. Think about all that expansion and contraction. Without a breather, you can blow out seals.
