What's going on with my shifter cable?

I had to pull my battery out and I had some whoosh transmission shifter bushings, so I figured I'd install them to see if they made any difference. I put the top ones with the thick side to the top and the side ones with the thick side facing towards the engine (so the thick side is outside the bracket). Everything bolted on nicely. However, I noticed that shifting to 1,3,5 has extra travel, where after selecting the gear is mushy. I think I've noticed this in the past, but with the new bushings in, it's much worse. Took another look at the cable and the connector to the transmission extends past the post when shifting up around a 1/2". When connected, you can see the cable overextending and bending.

The only thing I see wrong visually is that the plastic sheath is broken; I don't know if this effects function or not. I removed the clip in neutral on the other cable and put it in 4th gear...no change. That's the only adjustment I know of. I removed the short shifter and it's still the same.

Thought I'd ask before replacing the shifter cables. Maybe there's something else causing the overextension. You can see the shifter cable in the picture.

Initially had a whoosh short shifter with shifter base bushings. Noticed a bit of extra travel after 1,3,5 is selected and assumed the shifter base or something was flexing. Honestly it could have been happening on the stock setup too, but didn't notice it.

Now that I put the transmission bracket bushings in, it's very pronounced and I can now see that the cable overextends and folds on itself.

One mod leads to another... 😉
Sounds like either something is needed to take up the slack (tensioner or slightly longer route) or a shorter cable is needed.

have you removed the center console to look at the shifter base/bushings? I'm just spitballing here, but I have both mods and as far as I am aware have no flexing or damage to my shifter cable.
