Adjusting Reverse Lockout?

I picked up a new shift knob a while ago from CJPonyParts.

It said I didn't need an adapter for the reverse lockout and I installed it per the instructions:
-Move shifter into reverse
-Twist off stock knob
-Add threadlocker and thread on new knob to same height

The problem is that when pulling the sliver ring into the bottom of the shift knob, it doesn't always allow me to shift into reverse.

I've found that when I grab below the shift ring and actually feel the cable/mechanism that should connect to the ring, I can slide it effortlessly into reverse.

Could anyone point me in the direction of a detailed blowup of the shifter, specifically around any parts related to the reverse lockout? Or, has this happened to anyone else? I'd like to get the silver ring to be the only thing I need to grab for the gearbox to go into reverse. It's dumb having to explain it to a valet driver.

Can you still raise the knob a thread or two and does that work?

I tried that. I raised it a few threads and the results are the same. When I use the silver ring alone, it won't go into reverse probably 90% of the time. But when I grab under the silver ring, through the boot, and lift the whole thing up, it goes into reverse 100% of the time, effortlessly.

From what you describe, that makes no sense.
In troubleshooting it is always best to retrace your steps.
I would put the original knob back on and make sure everything works correctly again.

@D1JL speaketh wisely. In absence of the knob, the RL should function unimpeded. It's one thing if it gets stuck in the knob, but with no obstruction, you don't have to futz with it.

I'm going to swap the stock knob back on to see if the problem goes away, but in the meanwhile, is there a cut-out view of the assembly I can look at?

I'm interested in how the lockout ring connects to the mechanism that opens the gate to the reverse gear.

I just found this: https://www.redlinegoods.com/Fiesta11install.php for installing a new shift boot. I think I might just have an issue with the piece next to step 7.

I looked in the service manual and found nothing about it.

So I think this is where my problem is.

When I grab the boot, I can feel the plastic strip (with the blue arrow) and when I pull up on that, I get reverse. But when I use the ring only, I don't. I'm assuming that it somehow isn't connected to the shift ring completely.

Ok - maybe when you removed the OEM knob, you dislodged the retainer somehow. That's the only logical explanation...

Yes, he can turn the boot inside out and check that.
Of course the boot must be removed first.
