Should I tune for 91 and just run 93 for an extra margin of safety?

Gotta remember, the OP is already a little hesitant. So let's put this in perspective. Line a car up with a 91 tune against the exact same car with a 93 tune. You will never see a noticeable difference (if any at all)....GUARANTEED. Now, isnt it better for HIM to tune on 91, then run 93 for his own peace of mind? He isnt giving up anything at all performance wise, but gaining safety and peace of mind. He also doesnt have to worry about getting crappy gas. Let's be honest.......what's the best decision for HIM.......?
I gave him his best decision. Get the 93 tune, and forgetaboutit.

If he's concerned about octane, he can monitor his OAR a few miles after a fill up. I do that sometimes if I'm not sure I added enough ethanol. There was only one time my OAR's went above -1.00 and it's because I tried to cut 87 with E85. I had to go back and add more ethanol to get -1.00.

You’re upgrading the fueling system and not using Ethanol?
There may be even less E85 stations in his area of Pennsyltuckey than our general locale, where there is a most definite DEARTH of them. [:(]

But, he is really close to Ohio, so who knows? [dunno]

Very true! I feel lucky being 25 minutes away from a station.

I asked because there wouldn’t be any point to upgrade the fuel system unless they were going to do an E blend. On 93, they’ll get knock before they run out of fuel.

"Lucky" to have it 25 mins away? No way!!! I can see the E85 station from my garage driveway, and the next E85 station after that is 10 mins down the road.

Yeah I HATE (j/k!!) all of you who can hit 10 E85 stations from your houses with a baseball.
The closest to me is now at least 45 minutes from my door, EACH WAY. [:(]

UNDERSTOOD (even without the explanation [wink]). [thumb]

I was just basically saying that he most likely WOULD use, and tune for an E blend, if he could. [:)]

I have been running a Stratified E30 tune for at least 2 years now. With the AP switchable capability, I actually have 5 tunes at my fingertips that I can change on the fly in about 1 second. E30, 93, E30 with a 15 psi limit (called "eco" by Stratified), 93 with a 15 psi limit, and valet (which I never use). I also had them cap the boost on the non-eco tunes at 25 psi because I was seeing almost 29, which was too high for my comfort. With the 25 psi cap, I see low 26 numbers at most. I mostly run E30 eco with the 15psi cap because that is a really safe place and the car is still very fun. I always run eco until the car is warmed up. Switching to full power really takes about 1 second.

Do you notice a difference? I hand calculated 30mpg on a tank of E30. I haven't switched my tune in about a year.

I just found out from a friend there is one at Newark airport and one in East Orange NJ. Since I'm up north now I'm debating if I should try an E blend tune out .

Yes, I knew about those, but I did not even have a turbo car when I was still in Springfield/Union County almost 9 years ago, so I never used them. [wink]

The ones in Pennsy, which are still far away from me, and maybe even the one in Shamong (N.J.) way down 206, are closer to me than those Essex County stations.

You'd think with our population we'd have more options and especially in PA with all that corn you have growing down by you!

Iim visiting my sister near Bethlehem this weekend and I was curious to see the e85 availability out here and within 10 miles there's like four places I'm jealous.

Yeah, we're definitely not Iowa, or the midwest in general, as far as corn production goes, but I do have some large acreage cornfields not even a mile from where I sit right now. LOL
The Nazareth/Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton area has more E85 stations than around here, that's for sure!

To put the cart away, I got bold right before heading out to get the parts put on and threw in 4 gallons of E85 and topped up with 93 (~E35ish~) and loaded up my E30 Dizzy tune for one last drive on the stock turbo. Glad I did because this thing is a blast now with that much corn juice on the S280. Now I just need to decide who to go with for a straight 93oct tune.
