Breaking in new engine.

I have put a new engine in my mk7 st. My question is.

Can I break the new engine in with an upgraded turbosmart wastegate.?

Or should I break the engine in with the stock wastegate then install after the break in?

The car has a stage one remap.

Wastegate won't really matter for breaking in a new engine since generally during break in you aren't revving the engine high and making much boost.

Not sure what the recommended break in procedure is for your new engine, but on my built SP63 engine, the first 500-1,000 miles had a recommended RPM limit of ~3500RPM. Which, when you aren't going WOT almost no boost will be made at that RPM.

So long as you aren't thrashing the engine right from the jump it shouldn't matter.

I’d just stick with the stock wastegate. Keep the revs under 3,500 and drive gently for the first 500–1,000 miles instead.

I remember being told, when breaking in a new engine, vary the RPM and load and avoid lugging the engine. Avoid steady RPM, like highway driving at a steady RPM. Either way just don't punish the engine with a lead foot as @arlisccm mentioned.

+1 on varying RPM. It can be a bit of a pain when you're on a long stretch of open road with a constant speed limit, but basically I would just periodically change to different gears every few minutes while maintaining roughly the same speed (keeping the RPM ~3500 max). 2-3 minutes in 6th, down to 4th or 5th for 2-3 minutes, back to 6th for a bit, so on and so forth.

If you can find a good size loop with varying speed zones and natural starts and stops it makes it a little easier, but I'm out in the sticks so it can be 15-20 miles between towns/speed zone changes in spots.
