Another DIY Airbox Mod

I saw all the mods people were doing and I like to keep my car looking pretty stock atleast under the hood. I decided to go off of what others have done and see how it goes.
I drilled a 1 3/4 hole in the bottom of the airbox using the drain hole as my pilot.
I then bought a 1.5 inch 90 degree rubber elbow from lowes(i think it was 5 bucks).
I shoved the elbow into the bottom of the airbox and voila. It isnt perfect and I dont know how much it will help but I feel it is now going to feed more cold air into the airbox. I also drilled another small hole in the bottom of the airbox for drainage just so water doesnt pool around it.
The elbow faces the front of the car just like the current cold air feed at the top. I was going to use glue to secure it but I just left it wedged for now and we will see what happens.

Here is a link to the elbow I used: Elbow

Looks cool man. Prob works well also. I'm just too big of a poo-nanner for something like that in Florida. When it rains, it pours, and the water gets deep quick even in well drained places. 3 months ago my brother hydro locked his 250k mile bone stock IS300 in a brand new neibor hood. If he can do that, a fist with scoop might be a little too easy. But it looks like it would work well if its not too exposed to the heat from radiator :)

With the OEM inlet still being open there is really no way to hydrolock because air takes the path of least resistance. This is no more dangerous than the Mountune intake would be in any location of the world, and if someone were to be in that deep of water to start with-regardless of the excuse-then that was their first mistake.

I was trying to mimick the mountune effect. I was going to use a tube but I popped on the elbow and it was like magic. I will be able to tell some seat hp numbers tomorrow when i drive to work.

Nicely done, but is there any evidence that the stock unmodified air box is restricting airflow to the engine?

Well that is a good question. Mountune seems to think so since they sell a kit that is the lower box only with a k&n drop in with an opening for more ducting.

Thank you. I will definitely.

I can not say I have gathered any evidence showing that it is "restricting" and I cannot give you any evidence with a flowmeter? or whatever to show that mine gives more airflow. This is just a simple mod to try to replicate what mountune did.

I have a green filter which is comparable to a K&N so my thoughts were that if they are selling something for hundreds of dollars it is either really expensive snake oil or there is some logic behind it. I figure 6 dollars for the elbow wasnt a bad test ;)

So what is the benefit from this? Sound? Power? Both? I might be open to the idea, even just for sound. My M4 has nasty sound from the turbo on the intake side. I was considering the injen intake and building a box for it.
