Palomar Mountain – South Grade (Hard Section) write up
The technical hard section runs several miles with tightly stacked corners, short straights, elevation change, and limited sightlines. It’s moderate high difficulty due to corner density and constant transitions, rewarding continuity and anticipation over peak speed.
Gear choice:
Staying in 2nd gear minimized shifts and heavy braking, kept the drivetrain loaded, and reduced disruption between closely spaced corners. Short straights didn’t justify an upshift because any small gain would immediately require harder braking into the next turn.
South Grade favors a single-gear, low-transition approach; 2nd gear aligns well with the road’s demands without chasing upshifts.
Fiesta ST — 2nd gear mechanical range
(US-spec gearing, 2nd = 2.048, final = 3.824, 205/40R17)
Usable low end: ~20–25 mph (low-mid RPM, smooth response)
Core usable band: ~30–50 mph (where it feels strongest and most controllable)
Near shift point: ~55–58 mph (around a conservative ~6500 rpm shift light)
Absolute top (rev-limiter dependent): ~60–64 mph (if revved higher)
