Unlike the same old Merkur XR4Ti, which depended on a 2,three-litre four-cylinder petrol engine instead of the United Kingdom variant’s 2,8-litre Cologne V6, this version returns to the realm of six-cylinder powerplants. The RS4Ti, which is four inches and 10,6 cm wider (with the aid of manner of the fender flares) than the original version, is powered with the aid of a Ford 2,three-litre EcoBosst crate engine, which has upgraded lower rotating assembly, greater especially upgraded, connecting rods, pistons, cylinder heads, camshafts throttle bodies and a bigger Ford turbo which Ford calls its “EcoBeast”. The 2,three-litre powerplant is said to be capable of an output of up to 370 kW.

Yeah, that's pretty wicked!

It easily outdoes the power of the original RS500 Sierra Cossies, along with modern tech and reliability (even despite the boosted power output, as long as they addressed any of the FoRS/EB Stang engine pitfalls along with the strengthened and forged bottom end), but then it also has an additional 0.3 liters of displacement to start with.

XR4ti is an interesting car. I had one for many years. The old Lima 2.3 turbo is totally anemic and there is basically no aftermarket for it, despite the many different Ford vehicles it came in.

The car it’s self is pretty cool with RWD and independent rear suspension. The specific Merkur looks were always meh to me but I got mine to turn into a Cossie clone. I imported thousands of dollars of original Ford Cossie body work for it. I had AVO coilovers imported from the UK for it. Did a T5 trans swap, fully custom autometer gauges in the dash (replaced the original gauges). Whole bunch of other stuff.

Despite all that it never came together as a finished project due to costs and time. I still think about it often.

But anyway, if you do intend to get one, just know the possible issues going in.

Sounds like it was a great project car! I've always liked that it is a lil bit ugly. I mean, if we're splitting hairs, so is our FiST lol But I'm into the car more for the nostalgia. I'd probably only restomod it for looks and just have a VERY unique car with a face only a mother would love. lol

I shoud slightly qualify and say that most of the base looks of the car I did like, it was the Merkur specific body cladding, and the bumper covers especially with the US mandated 5 mph crash standard bumpers that looked awful. Cause put the Cossie body work on the Sierra / Merkur and they look awesome. Kinda like the few generations of Lancer EVO we got here. The base model Lancer is like bleh, econobox, but the EVO with their specific bumpers, wheels and wing look bad ass.

Also, speak for yourself on the FiST! I love the looks of the FiST, especially once lowered a little and some either wider or further offset wheels that stick out just a bit.

^^^Yes, I've always loved the aesthetics of the Sierra Cossie RS500s (and their evolutions), and yeah, they made our XR4Tis look downright pedestrian/'homely' by comparison!

Same on our cars, for to me at least, especially in Euro/Brit 2 door trim, it is one of the best looking subcompacts ever built.

about 4 years ago, I had the opportunity to buy a running decent condition one for $700 and I chickened out and I had been kicking myself ever since. and I routinely thought about it.

Your comment made me no longer regret that decision.

I'd really like to own an Escort Cossie RS someday, as it is one of my fave rides of all time, and the car that got me back into world level rallying after the demise of the insano Group B cars.

They are now also old enough to not have to worry about all of that grey market BS/importing woes like one did when they were less than 30 years old.

Ya our FiST’ are not ugly at all in fact they are rather good looking for sub compact. Look at a Fit and tell me it looks better. Look at the MK7. sister car the Mazda 2 and tell me it looks better . Look at the Yaris outside of the GR and tell me it looks better . They don’t! Ford did a great job designing our Eggs.In Orange mine screams angry Pokémon in Black they look like something Darth Vader would posses “ Luke come to the dark side drive me the Force is with me” 😂

That Clio is NOT a ordinary, run of the mill version.

Agree, it's one of the coolest Fords of all time if you ask me, one I would love to own.

The Escort RS Cosworths that have been in the US since the 90s from Sun International shouldn't be much of a hassle to register, they are totally legal, but they are rare and expensive when they come up for sale. Then again, I wonder if the price of importing one into the US would be about the same price considering the extra costs that comes with importing.

I mean, check out what you got from Sun Int. when you bought the car... you bought this car if you were a rally fan, no other reason to back then. Reminds me when I bought my Subaru STI back in the day it came with Subaru World Rally Team pictures and an SCCA membership.
