Fuel mileage / economy

I know these things are meant to be fun wot machines, but…what about the times you want to maximize mpg?

I have a new-to-me stock ‘16 and have been getting 25 with 93 octane. 30/70 highway city. Going to refill tomorrow after a tank of 87. Curious if 87 will avoid overboost and increase mileage

what are you all averaging?

(And I know most don’t care - enjoy the car for what it’s made for)

City driving I get 24mpg if I'm not going crazy all the time. That's been consistent with the stock tune and a dizzy stage 1 tune.
As a side note, I'm in shock from spending $51 for 10 gallons of 93 here in NC (yes, I know it's way worse in California, but for me, that's the most I've ever spent for gas😱)

Why would 87 provide addition MPG? I would assume a change in driver habits knowing 87 is in the tank would change MPG - it's not a double-blind taste test! I get 27-29 daily - not careful with the pedal on the right....

87 would likely be the same, maybe a little worse if anything.

yup, in PA I just paid $5.19 for 93

I DD my FiST and I ( luckily ) only use about half a tank a week so I just keep it topped off to help the shock a little lol

Car and Driver reported it only goes to overboost on premium (below the section that’s circled). Not sure if it’s in the owners manual though

The article does not say it only goes into over boost on premium. It still goes into over boost but does not produce max power unless you use 93 octane. Had to run 87 one time in my car and never again if at all possible. Seems like a 1 sec delay in acceleration and on mine with the MP-215 a very noticeable drop in power.

Driving efficiently is in the techniques. It starts with restraint. Keep your foot out of it, skip shift 1-2-4-6 at lower RPM's. I'm pissed if my MP-215 gets less that 36 on hwy at indicated 75mph when I drive for economy. Don't floor it to enter an interstate if you can time a gentle entry. Don't be a late braking specialist and time your approach to red lights to maintain speed. Try not to stop and go by pacing yourself in traffic and keep tires well inflated. Our FiST's without major mods will do fine if you do your part for mileage.
Hard running back roads still brings 22-24.

Is 87 bad for the engine or will it just make less power? With gas being so expensive, I was thinking about going to a Cobb stage 0 tune and filling up on 87. I'm driving like a grandma anyway to increase mpg lol. My fiesta is getting driven a lot right now because I'm waiting on parts to fix my focus.

It won’t hurt anything if you’re on the stock tune.

When I bought my 17, the sales rep told me they run on 87... I consistently saw 34mpg for 2 yrs. Shortly after I bought my 19, and went to the Octane Academy (where they recommended premium--93 where I live), I saw that figure drop to 30-32. Anecdotal evidence, but my route/driving habits remained the same.

Just went through my first tank of 87: 28.5 mpg. Was consistently 25.5 on 93 for the previous 5 tanks. Again, small data set, but interesting that it lines up with your experience.

Others?

I’m running a stock tune and my MPGs have been around 28 mpg mixed driving. Ironically, when on a Cobb stage 1 I was getting around 29-30 mpg. The reason is the extra torque allows you short shift more often and to stay in 6th gear longer.

I would be so nervous to drive like I do on 87 that there is no doubt of picking up a few miles per gal. I'm starting to mix 87 and 93 (just doing $25 every other) and try to not over react on Rt202.....

When I bought this car about 2-3 years ago I remember thinking it was just a matter of time before we saw $3+ a gallon. I was looking hard at muscle cars and decided against it and picked up my FIST for $9k.

I feel like I can still have fun even with gas prices as high as they are.
