Shift knob adapter question

Weird question here. Is this in the picture an adapter? I recently bought a aftermarket knob with the right thread and compatible with reverse lockout. But it is way smaller than that shown in the picture. Any thoughts? I’m not sure what it’s supposed to look like oem. (The previous knob was on there when I bought the car.) The second photo is the existing knob for reference.

Yeah, that's an adapter on there. I'm sure it's to retain the reverse-lock-out.
