Time for a new project...

Well, I have enjoyed my time with the Fiesta ST but I hunger for more (especially with a warranty intact). My Ford lease ends in 7 months. I will be paying off the balance and keeping it as my daily driver. Almost 36,000 miles trouble free miles, car is still perfect in every way.

With that said, I've decided to get a silver 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 as a new project car. Comes with a 640hp & 640pft LT4 engine (same as comes in C7 Z06s). I think it will be a very nice weekend car (or garage queen). lol. Yeah, it's a bit pricey but I can afford it (or even a new Z06 but I like that it seats more than just two people).

I've mulled around getting a Mustang GT (or even a 350R) but the new ZL1 looks to be on a whole different level of performance.

I'm not really brand loyal. I've owned almost an equal amount of GM products to Ford products, including a WS6 Firebird Formula, two C5 Vettes yada yada.

Thoughts?

Why not a German car? I don't know much about this ZL1, but there is a list of German car's I would easily make it my garage queen , especially from my experience German car has higher quality paint... it would look prettier hahaha. (this fiesta paint is depressing to work with).

Can't buy a German car with the same performance potential for anywhere around the same money. I also think a base Z06 Corvette is an amazing deal considering the price point. I could get a Porsche Cayman GTS for what the ZL1 costs. They don't perform anywhere close to what the ZL1 should (mid 3s 0-60 and high 11's in 1/4 mile). Also, the handling the ZL1 looks very promising. I would wait a while longer and save a bit more to put down on a Z06 but I like that the Camaro can seat 4 and is $20k less. I agree about the paint, but... it is a $20k+ car. ;-)

cool ride. do you ever have a need to seat 4? 640 horsepower.... straight from the factory... what a time to be alive. Let us know what you end up doing! Will it be just a weekend cruiser?

cannot argue with the dollar per performance aspect of domestic cars now a days.

I came from a few VW/Audi cars, and while I love them a lot, for the money the car isn't all that fast. but you can tell the spent the money on other parts of the vehicle.

My fiesta stock for stock driving back to back with my friends 13 GTI (DSG), the GTI felt numb and boring, but so comfortable and quiet.. and well, quite frankly luxurious. lol The fiesta is closer to a performance car than the GTI now a days. If I have to go German now a days I think it would be a Porsche Cayman or a Bmw M2, both no where near as fast as the ZL1/GT350R, but man if I need a car to admire, I wont stand for the cheap paint jobs of domestic cars. lol.

While its off somewhere in the far future, my next toy in consideration would be a stang or m... depending of what the wife approves.... seriously.

so the fiesta modding is over? it will sit where it is right now?

would you happen to have somewhere a ecobeast badge left...? I found some threads that you pretty much ran out but I figure I ask.

I keep mulling over the possibility of doing a hybrid turbo in the future but honestly the Stage 3 set up with E30 (Adam Brunson) tune is really nice and has been on my car for a year now with not a single issue. Dead, solid, perfect. With the ZL1 purchase in the near future there is no good reason for me to continue modding my FiST. It will be a nice, paid off daily driver. I don't think I will even bother with running the E30 tune as it's kind of a PITA to get the E85 to do the mix where I live, plus the E30 map is not great for mpg.

GM is saying the ZL1 should hit 3.3 seconds 0-60 (with the new 10 speed auto) and 3.5 to 3.6 seconds for the MN6. Of course I will get the manual (I think it will be more fun to drive and I'm a bit of a pompous purist )

I'm assuming that is a Z/28. I really like the price point of the ZL1. I don't know much about the new Z/28 but I would gather that it will be even more track oriented and a bit less livable.

I changed my mind and have abandoned the Camaro ZL1. lol. I see 20 Camaro's a day but I have never spotted a Z06 convertible in the wild. I figure if I am going to spend this much money on a car, I might as well get what I *really* want.... the way I want it, so this is what I have decided to get instead:

EXCELLENT CHOICE, and I have to say I am EXTREMELY jealous!!

Save for the very limited edition 427 ragtop C6 (basically a C6 Z06 convertible), I did not like the looks of modern Vette drop tops, that is until this C7 one came out.

It just looks GREAT (and more 'exotic' than some actual exotics), top up or down!

The only thing I don't like about the C7 Z06 and 6th gen ZL1s is that heat soaking huffer in the valley of their LT engines, but if you are not going to be doing extended open tracking with them, it is not much of a problem.

I do still think that for the 6th gen Z28, and the next Z06, Chevy should follow their older formula of just more displacement (there is PLENTY of room in the LT1 block for this!) and NATURALLY ASPIRATED, in order to have extended use, truly track capable machines.

Personally, I'd talk to my dealer about getting an order in for a GT500. Twin-Turbo V8 (probably Coyote, not Voodoo, though I could be wrong), and there might even be a GT500R with Carbon Fiber wheels.

Although, the Z06 convertible is damn sexy.

^^^My guess is that will come in north of (price wise) the Z06 ragtop, given how some dealers are asking (and getting I suppose) >$100K for the GT350Rs.

But yes, IF coin is NO issue at all, and they set this next GT 500/500R up for handling much more so than they were in the past (less nose heavy, tires/wheels wider, suspension dialed in, etc.) then go for it!!

Yes. I will owe $12k on the Fiesta ST after the lease ends in Feb. I will pay it off and keep it as my DD. The C7z will be my weekend, date car, garage queen. I will probably just get a Halltech intake and a tune (worth about 40+ more horsepower) which is more than enough. While the new ZL1 will undoubtedly be a great car, the Z06 convertible is very uncommon (exclusivity), it is lighter and faster and *MUCH* better looking. Yes, it will be more expensive (approximately $10-k-$12k more than the ZL1) but when you are spending this kind of money I don't think the compromise is worth it and you might as well bite the bullet and get EXACTLY what you want. The C7 Z06 is a world beater and can be had for around $75,000 (coupe) and around $80,000 for the convertible. Mine will list for around $86,500. I should be able to get it for $80k which is a freakin smashing deal for a car with this performance.

Thanks. The C7 body style took some getting used to. I actually preferred the C6 Z06. The convertible version of the C7 is very nice looking, IMHO, much better looking than the coupe. I will still keep the FiST. It is an amazing car, probably #2 on my list and I've owned 50+ different cars in my 47 years. It's a keeper for sure.

Thanks. I went back to work last October (came out of retirement after 11 years) and have been saving $1k a week since then to have a really good down payment. I had to sacrifice doing more mods to the FiST to make this happen. lol. Even so, I will still have a $700+ a month car payment.
