Petrol tank not filling properly

Went to fill my st up (had less than 1/8 tank left). As i was filling up it stopped after about 13L (pump clicked off). Sometimes this happens so i just clicked the pump again as it sometimes happens with older pumps. It immediately clicked off again. I pulled the hose out and went to do it again and a quantity of petrol came back out of the petrol tank and spilled onto the floor. Tried a couple more times but the car would accept no more fuel. The petrol gauge said the tank was half full and i am inclined to believe it - the previous tank had covered around 360miles and the car usually accepts around 30L maybe more (approx. £50 of petrol).

Is this a problem that i should be worried about or is it more likely to be the pump? Found some information about breather tubes but not familiar with this issue happening to anyone else!

Thanks!

Change pumps* don't use that pump next time. Try another but if it clicks off DON'T try to put more fuel in it. Just leave it.
