Purge Valve with Filter?

I'm pretty sure I have been fighting the dreaded purge valve issue for awhile, but now it has gotten to the point where I must fix it.

I recall researching this issue a few months ago and found a post where someone replaced the whole system with just fuel hose and a purge valve from some other vehicle (volvo maybe)? They also added an inline filter into the setup to try and catch some of the crap that eventually sticks the valve. I'm not sure if that thread was on this site or a Focus site, but I was hoping someone might have it saved here and could point me to it. I've spent hours using the search function trying to find it as well as just searching the whole internet.

While searching the whole internet I see that some people replace the newer cars with a 2014 valve instead (mine is a 2018). Is that the way to go?

Thank you Typhoon! That is the one I was thinking. Looks like you can buy some of the parts off Amazon for around $100 though. Not sure I need fancy AN fittings for this, but it would look nicer.

Replaced mine, issues went away for 4 months or so, and now it is stumbling again after fill-ups. I hope there is a better alternative to the OEM filter.

Thank you Typhoon! That is the one I was thinking. Looks like you can buy some of the parts off Amazon for around $100 though. Not sure I need fancy AN fittings for this, but it would look nicer.
If the Fiesta setup wasnt $350 and maybe $200-250 id buy it.

Replaced mine, issues went away for 4 months or so, and now it is stumbling again after fill-ups. I hope there is a better alternative to the OEM filter.
I'm going with the 'less than full tank' method. I click off at 10 gallons from the low fuel light. At least it doesn't cost $250!

Thanks Bull Run. I'm investigating all options for this.
No problem. Can you post the link to the filter? I can try adding to my setup to see if it causes any issues or triggers CEL. With the smaller battery box, I don't even need to remove the induction hose to work on the purge valve.

Sounds like there are 2 things that might be needed. 1 is a better check valve. They are saying they have tested the stock ones (this if from the Focus, but I assume we have one on the Fiesta...haven't checked our setup yet) and the stock one won't hold over 20 psi of boost. I've seen 2 mentioned:

Thanks for the info. Since I'm using 3/8" hoses, I ordered 3/8" Billet Inline Fuel Filter 30 Micron Aluminum Black that you posted above. I got rid of the cold-side pipe to induction hose tubing so I don't need the second check valve. I will place the fuel filter on the hose between the firewall and purge valve to see if causes any issues or CEL.

  • Spectra Premium - They offer a direct replacement EVAP purge valve (Part Number: SV199) which is known for its durability and compatibility with Ford vehicles. This part is designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications.
  • Dorman - Dorman produces an EVAP Purge Solenoid Valve (Part Number: 911-915) that fits several Ford models, including the Fiesta ST. Dorman parts are often praised for their quality and affordability.
  • Delphi - Another option is from Delphi (Part Number: FP10121), which provides a reliable replacement with a focus on performance and longevity.

That looks like a nice one to go straight to some fuel hose. I might end up going with it as well.

I haven't seen any discussion about these alternatives. Dorman does have a kit they sell with their valve and some push clamps to swap it out. Haven't really seen any positive or negative feedback on it.
I'm looking at 1 of 3 options right now:

I think all 3 of these are Bosch parts. Supposedly the Ford ones are now made in Mexico and folks are questioning the durability. The Hyundai one is made the Czech Republic. Sounds like the old Ford ones from Germany might be the best thing going if you can find some old stock somewhere.

From what I'm reading they will all keep failing no matter what, but the china ones fail really quick. Supposedly the filter and check valve upgrade help everything last a little while longer.

Just replace with the 2014 harness, it’ll last a few years. I’m lazy so I converted to the 2014, which takes 15 minutes, and keep replacing it with a new OEM evap assembly. Takes 15 minutes and like $150 to change every couple years. I’m on my 3rd evap assembly including the stock one in 7 years of ownership. Not something I care to put any effort towards until someone figures out how to delete the system entirely.

Installed the fuel filter as shown below. Didn't see any issues during the test drive. I will be driving a longer distance tomorrow so will see if this triggers a CEL or not.

Nice work. Let me know how it goes on fill-up. At 80k miles, my 2017 is starting to die at red lights for the first 5-10 miles after a fill up and if it's that easy of a fix - just installing a check valve in the fuel line - then I'm in.

I replaced the purge valve about two years ago and haven't had any issues since. I fueled up today and didn't have any issues either. If your purge valve is already shot, you'll need to also replace it. Too soon to tell if addition of the filter is the solution but at least it's not causing any issues.
