I've been running a pro tune by Randy(mountune) since my fiesta was stock with just a high flow filter in the stock airbox. Recently, I've added a 3" downpipe and an upgraded intercooler. So I decided to run the Cobb OTS Stage 3 map for my new setup and it is significantly slower than when my car was stock with a pro tune by Randy. Imagine what he can do if I got him to do a new tune for me. It's just so expensive to get a custom tune from Randy and I'm not sure how good stratified tune is. I doubt stratified is better than mountune. Does anyone have any experience with both mountune and stratified and can convince me to choose stratified over mountune for a new tune?

When I unmarried my AP3 and Randy's pro tune to trade in, the difference was absolutely astounding. It was depressing to drive on the stock tune. I quit well ahead of where Randy said he could go, because I wanted some safety margin in my tune.

When we were ending the process Randy told me to email him when I was ready for the next tune. If you got the first tune for free as part of a Mountune FB package, he will give you a discount on future tunes.

The typical hierarchy of "mainstream" tuners here seems to be (for stock turbo anyway):

Dizzy ~ Stratified < JST < CPe ~ Tune+ < Mountune

Sad that he seems to be his reluctant to tune a hybrid turbo / any big turbo that isn't Mountune branded, he could do more in the community if he did. That being said I loved my tune from him when I had it.

I cannot say he will tune on a non stock turbo, but if you email him you may be surprised by what he can do. ;)

I just got the 93 octane w/ intercooler tune from mountune. I haven't installed the intercooler yet, because it's cold out. The ECU is still learning, but it's amazing. In the US, mountune really knows what they're doing. I have the mountune CAI and intake hose, and no other mods to the engine (yet). This is estimated at the crank, but it blows away the MP215 I had previously, and that's a damn good tune, too. Good enough to warranty and pass CARB. You can bitch about the cost, but they had to pass in California. The BEST stage 1 tune in the US. This stage 2 is likewise the best in the US:

Ya randy started his own business because mountune stopped offering custom calibrations. His business is called tunewerks I think.

hmmm I'm now debating makign the jump from stratified to Randy's Tunewerks Tune. Any thoughts if it'd be worth the cost? ($270). I'm growing weary of having no power past 5000 rpm

The dude's definitely got the credentials. This engine just doesn't have it up top without a bigger snail or a cam or a head or something.

I think my CP-E tune was $550 for two fuels on aux fuel. No word on what Mitch is doing since leaving CP-E. Not sure if he plans to start his own business but I wish he would.

Randy's TuneWerks tunes seem cheap on his website. I reached out to him about tuning my setup for 93 Octane, E50 and E85.

Are these tunes actually better than Stratified or Dizzy? If so in what aspect?
It is really hard to say who is better than who. You are paying someone for their knowledge and experience, not just the toon. Without a really good technical understanding of the tuning process, it is hard to answer your question.

I have experienced tuning with both Mitch (@ CP-E at the time) and Alex (@ Stratified) and both were very intelligent, technical engineers. Mitch was super willing to help troubleshoot, explain the technical stuff, and just overall spend a lot of time with me on questions. Alex is smart but not as willing to answer questions with great detail. The turnaround time with Stratified was also unbearable IMO.

I have had conversations with Jason @ Dizzy and am impressed. I also appreciate the fact that he uses the forums to engage the community (not just facebook like some of the other guys). I may try tuning with him this Spring.

I know nothing about Randy other than what I have read. His customer base is mainly rally focused right now so I wanted to reach out since that is what I primarily use my car for. Hoping to learn more about his experience through email in the near future.

I think Adam @ TunePlus is doing a lot for the ford community as well. I think he is the best at marketing on Facebook so he is a staple for tuning services. I had an incident with him with a part I purchased that left a really bad taste in my mouth so I cannot speak to his tuning.

In the end, you need to come up with your own determination on who is best based on what is important to you. I value reliability most so I ask a lot of questions about what safety systems are left in place. The Ford ECU uses quite a few safety systems to ensure the engine doesn't get destroyed. Not all tuners leave these systems in place.

All of the above is specifically regarding custom tunes at large power levels (>250WHP w/ aftermarket turbo). If you have a bolt on car, a flash tune from any reputable tuner mentioned on this forum should be safe enough.

Customer service aside, I was just wondering if there was some metric being used to make a determination or if this was just opinion.

It's all opinion. I'm sure any experienced tuner can give you what you want, tune-wise. Randy just has a lot of experience with Fords and he's tuned a lot of their vehicles and helped win them quite a few races. He left mountune, but his fingerprints are all over their tunes, and they're good.

I only spoke to him once on the phone. He answered my questions and was very willing to talk. If I ever decide to go stage 3, I think I'll get a custom tune from him and see how it goes.

This interesting because when he was at Mountune he only communicated through email and did not like talking on the phone and that was widely known and talked about.
Not saying he is not a nice guy, his tunes are indeed good but that was just the modus operandi back then and even the guys at Mountune were like ya email him don’t try to get him on the phone.
That may have changed now that he has gone into business for himself though.

To anyone considering tunes look at the tuner and look at their experience with our platform and or the particular Turbo you are using. The only time to stray from that is if you can get a a platform familiar local dyno tune as a lot of the heavy pull data logging gets taken care of on the dyno.

People seem to not realize a 3rd and 4th gear pull from say 2500-redline needs to be done in Mexico.
