On YT (where else - it's the most trusted source of all information), I found a reference to needing to put some "special" additive into the transmission fluid to assist with lubrication. This sounds odd to me.
Any truth to this? If so, what is this magical additive?

That would be for a clutched based limited slip differential.
For example some vehicles that have limited slip rear differentials need an additive for the clutch packs.

To elaborate on what FordSt said, the additive modifies the friction of the transmission fluid to allow a user to adjust how the clutch pack operates. A Torsen or helical LSD like a Quaife does not need any additives.
