Curious as to why not to go with the airtec manifold? It's been shown to to fatten the midrange a good deal.

Also I wonder how this turbo would sound on the 2J intake, who's tuning it 🤔

Simply because it is what's available. Built shortblocks are very close, but headstuds are a problem currently. We won't be cramming boost pressure down it's throat to the extent that we were. If I had to guess we will cap this in the mid to upper 20s psi wise as that will probably be close to the 375whp mark.
Where did you source the block?

Hey guys big update. Drove car to Georgia for install and tuning. On revision 5, turbo leaking oil out exhaust side, had it pulled off and oem installed and 6 hours back to FL on oem turbo.

unsure of what went wrong, will update when I hear back from distributor when they hear back from turbo technics. Looks like S280 is the way to go for now. What a nightmare. Again, not sure what occurred as far as failure is concerned.

Wanted to give an update, about a month later, S280 is in the mail on the way to me for install. Those few pulls (per installer) that were done before S290 seals failed, boost hit at high 4k's so it's got a hefty lag factor but tbh I love lag, like the stock evo lag 4B11T. *** have not heard back from distributor on the reason for the failure of the turbo. Waiting on turbo technics response apparently.

s280 is going on the car this weekend if the turbo comes in Friday (fingers crossed)

anybody have a better experience w the S290 I hope, I'd love to hear any experience better than mine.

It's been pretty quiet on the S290. Probably because the S280 is capable of more than what the stock block can handle already. I don't think there's many running built motors.

Anymore updates on this? I am debating on the s280,s290 or gtx2860r.
I’ve had s280, g25, and 2860. S280 is what will stay on the car for an while and the g25 will be in the garage for another day. G25 is the best turbo, but expensive. I’d go s280. There’s a reason it’s by far the most popular turbo for this car.

G25 550 isn't the best turbo it's too big actually

Skip the Gtx2860r, old ass ancient tech.

G25 550 has the most top end out of all the conventional turbo kits but it's also the laggiest. The S290 has a similar top end but it spools significantly sooner.

If you're looking for top end that doesn't tapper off at all...S290 is a great choice.

The G25 550 is slightly too much turbo for this car really unless you can spin more rpms. You would need a bigger cam, ported head and intake to justify running it.

Here's a graph of the powerband
Red G25 550
Yellow S290
Blue S280

FB_IMG_1751297165918.jpg

As you can see, the G25 550 has an unacceptable torque dip, it's just too much. The S290 remains flat till the end.

Team NDR used to run the G25 550, when they switched to the S290 they actually got faster because it spools 1000 rpms sooner than the G25 550.
People need to do research instead of just running off of dogmatic opinion of from the cult following of the S280.

I plan on buying it soon myself.
Hope this helps.
