So I just finished up installing my my Eibach Pro Kit. During disassembly I removed said box from the strut on both sides trying to figure what it was other than more unsprung weight. I didn't bother putting them back on with apparent no ill effects.

What is its purpose?

Some call it a noise dampener, others call it a counterweight.

Ford Parts actually calls it:
Front Suspension Vibration Damper, Special Suspension.

Many have removed them, as have I.

It adds mass to the front suspension to combat harmonic distortion at specific frequencies.
