I suspect that the system updates itself incrementally. (peep the "build number" not just the version)
This may be why it says, update successful, but nothing appears to be different after the reboot.
The WiFi download stalled and never had the patience to see whether it would ever un-stall itself after a few reconnects.

I used a 16GB generic USB drive formatted with the ExFAT file system. The flashdrive has a USB3 interface but that won't necessarily mean anything.
Even if all of the 7Zip files were extracted back to the drive into temporary folders, there would still be tons of space left on a 16GB.
The first attempt at update reported success. Version number was still 1.0. The build number could've incremented but I wasn't paying that much attention.
Second attempt, days later, just hopped in the car, never hitting the Start button, unplugged other USB devices, plugged in the flash drive, then turned on the radio.
During the update, spent some time interacting with Sync, just to maybe avoid having it shutoff. Another Update Successful.
Hit the Sync power, waited for power "off", then hit Sync power again to boot it back up.
Version now reads 2.x.
Hit power again to shut it down and went back in the house; vehicle was never started.
There have been a few hiccups so far, like the audio module temporarily freezing/crashing.
