Virginia Inspections

Just moved to Virginia two months ago and I’m trying to find out about our safety inspections. Carrol County isn’t required to do emissions, but is a cat required to pass safety inspection? If So, when I upgrade my downpipe is a high flow cat good enough?

Thanks in advance.

If you don't have to do emissions, you're fine. Part of the safety inspection does involve the exhaust, but it's just "does it have one? is it leaking?" That's it.

If you did have to do emissions, you'd probably still be fine as long as your car isn't exceeding the stock emissions levels. It's nowhere near as silly as CARB here, fortunately. You won't get failed simply for having changed to an aftermarket cat.

Welcome to Virginia! I've been here for about a year and a half, up in the NoVA area (aka, the DC Metro area).

Over 80 mph in the state of Virginia is automatically reckless driving, for those that don't know. Part of why I own two cars that I don't need to be doing 80 mph in to have fun.

That seems a bit silly especially in a 70mph zone. I guess I won’t been getting clocked at 132 in a 55 and somehow only walk away with a $85 dollar ticket and not points like I did in SC. Lol

There was an effort to get it raised to 85 mph on highways with a 70 mph speed limit, though I'm not sure what happened to it. The old 80 mph law was put in place when 65 mph was the state-wide speed limit.

Meanwhile, 80 mph is the flow of traffic speed on I-495 (aka the Beltway) all day every day. That's a 55 mph highway.

I would never not ever live in Virginia.

Move to North Carolina the better state.
Virginia is a money-hungry state that wants to throw you in jail for everything. They can blow me.

It's really not that bad. Plenty of roads here that are fun at the speed limit. There's one that goes to Harper's Ferry that has a 55 mph speed limit... and that's pretty fast for what that road is. There's one that crosses the NoVA area from Sterling to Fairfax where you'll legitimately catch air if you're 5-10 mph over. I definitely don't get bored driving here, and it's rare I'm pushing the limit beyond 5-10 mph over on those roads. Taxes are pretty high, though. They just repaved every road in my area, though, so they do seem to actually put it to use.

I've been here about a year and a half now, and I'm pretty happy with the decision.

Very familiar with Virginia. I've been in North Carolina basically my whole life.
I don't agree with the state's aggression towards people. Never have never will.

Are you talking about Bennett road? I used to jump that road all the time way back in the day. Lol.

Just get a high flow cat. Catless doesn't give enough power to be worth it, and you're polluting 10x what you would with a cat.

Living in Virginia I have to do all my high speed runs in West Virginia, there are some great roads that you never see cops on it because they are main roads where the majority of cars are. Doesn't mean you want come up on one but most of the time I own the roads I am on.. and owning a Hayabusa the 65-70 speed limit is just not fast enough LOL
