Downpipe install turned into a huge oil leak…

Me and a bunch of my buddies got together to put my new mishimoto downpipe in on my 2016 FiST and after finishing the car was running fine. Then while driving it began to smoke pretty bad. After a few miles I parked and saw a major oil leak. I had a few codes pop up related to the camshafts. Had no boost pressure then eventually when trying to get home I went into limp mode (Had to get towed the rest of the way because it was running so badly). Any ideas what this could be before I starting looking at everything. Would like to get a pinpoint on what it could be specifically. Thank you.

You got your diagnostic order wrong. Start by looking at your car to have specific information and data to give then we can start helping you. Otherwise that's just a blindfolded guessing game.

I would suspect that the oil line for the turbo was either damaged or disconnected. I also expect that you will find your engine and turbo are completely destroyed due to your continuing to drive the car after it started smoking.

Have a look here:

https://www.fiestastforum.com/threads/heat-shield-psa.13783/

You / your friends likely removed the bolt for the oil feed line thinking it was a heat shield bolt. It would not have been immediately noticed until the line popped out enough to leak.

It is also likely that you have seized your turbo from a lack of oil, and potentially damaged the variable valve timing system due to a lack of oil. Hopefully you didn't manage to damage the main / rod bearings. You should have parked the car immediately when you saw the smoke & then had it towed home. Why you continued to drive it, is absolutely beyond me.

My son burnt down his first fiesta doing just this: replaced the downpipe. He has since learned his lesson to actually check for leaks/odd things before he drops the car and takes it out to a dark school parking lot to make videos with friends. Like MagnetiseST stated, most likely they pulled the bolt for the oil feed line or just nicked the line itself while wrestling with the heatshield. Good thing the OP noticed it before the oil started combusting.

I’m gonna try and look at that oil feed line when I get the chance today. I know one of my friends was really teaching on that side for a bolt so hopefully it’s nothing extremely serious but from what I sounds like I could need a new turbo. I appreciate the help and replies. I’ll leave updates as I go.

Shit. Why??
I swear my exhaust system is squeaking and clanking due to the bullshit designed flex section (80k mile) being worn out. Motor mounts are solid-ass VibraTechnics. I've procured (we're couth here on the Forum) a Woosh downpipe - exhaust-porn for sure!, and expect my noise to dissipate. Oh, following installation of course. I'm using all of my procrastinator powers to read instead of wrench......

^^^If the factory stocker is worn out/broken/defective, and beyond the emissions warranty, by all means replace it with a catcon equipped aftermarket downpipe of one's choice.
But to go through all of the bother, and risk of breaking shit (like the op probably did) to replace a fully functional, perfectly sound factory downpipe, (especially with a catcon-less one) on the FACTORY snail, thinking that you are going to get even a half a pony out of it at peak power rev levels, just because it is 'what's done/standard go-to mod/expected' on other (mostly import) platforms is just insane.

Of course, with anything bigger than the stock hairdryer, this all goes out the window. [wink]

'Sound' can be had by just replacing everything/sections AFTER the downpipe, much much easier, and for not much more cost (depending on the brand of downpipe/system).

But yeah, it's the owner's ride, so do whatever you like, and enjoy it. [wink] [thumb]

I went from stock exhaust to 3" catted dp and mbrp full cat back all at once, so can't comment on whether the DP was worth it or not. Big turbo will be worth the DP upgrade though. But I agree - SR, RB, 1J or 2J, etc. DP makes a big difference in those cars. Our cars, not really.

Our little engine doesn’t need to move much air in the grand scheme of things. Even with a bigger turbo, full 3” is probably overkill. That said, I did it anyways.

So after double checking everything and going through the ins and outs of what’s happening me and my friends found where I was leaking oil (the line was disconnected but it did get worse) I was told once I started smoking I’d be fine to make it back to my house since it was only 4 mins away which was a horrible mistake. We found a pinky sized hole in my engine block. Luckily I’m under warranty so I’m just crossing my fingers that they will fix it. IMG_0838.jpg

How much oil was on your dipstick before (I assume) you refilled?

I changed the filter then filled the oil tank all the way. When we drained the oil the first time and mind you like not even a shot cups worth came out. So when we filled it we changed the spark plugs and then tried to start it because it was ticking before. Once it started I just started pooling under the engine after we had secured the oil feed line.

Just my opinion, but you shouldn't even attempt to have Ford pay for YOUR mistake.

I know, it sucks.

*whew* Yes - I'm replacing catted with catted and doing it to replace worn components. I expect I'll feel some basic change (improvement? sound? spool?), but that's NOT the reason for the change.
