Cerakote/extreme heat proofing mods

Fiesta's get hot. That's a fact. A hole caused by high heat (and defective casting) in the cylinder head spraying oil on my exhaust and causing a fire killed my last fiesta so I have been a little too obsessed with keeping my new 2016 cool. My first steps were safety reliability mods (fmic, radiator, 180 tstat, better fan shrouding, wetter water coolant, etc) but heat also kills power in the wrong places. Im about to put in airtec tubular manifold, whoosh hybrid Trac spec, and 2jr catless downpipe. Im curious about those that have cerakoted their exhaust components to see if it was worth it for both corrosion and heat reasons. I'm also curious to see what people's charge air Temps are for those that may have cerakoted/gold foiled their crossover/boost pipes. I will pob gold foil all the easy but im tempted to do some tests with engine, charge air, and a thermal gun to see what Temps are pre cerakote/gold foil vs after. Curious to see others thoughts or if the cerakote is worth it. I got a quote for about 200 shipped for my downpipe and manifold

FYI if you’re using an infrared thermometer or even an IR camera, you’ll either need to get one that can adjust emissivity, or simpler, put a piece of black electrical tape (or black kapton tape if you can locate some) on the spot you want to measure. Shiny stuff especially (like foil tape and bare or polished metal) have very different surface properties from what’s typically calibrated for and will totally throw off the measurement. Paints and dark plastics are usually okay for IR measurement.

Had my DP and heat shield heat cerakoted. Figured it would match nicely with whoosh's coated manifold and trac spec turbo. It was cheap to have done.

I just got my Airtec Manifold Cerakoted by Craig from B & C Powder Coating in Meriden CT. Really cool guy, great work, fair prices, and reasonable time frames to get things done. I'm about to bring him my hi flow cat and a few other items. from http://www.ctpowdercoating.com/

Wow that looks amazing. I choose bonehead performance out of PA. It's there right now hopefully coming back today or tomorrow. I choose gold for mine because ita the same high heat rating and no price difference. You notice any improvements with the airtech?

Did this all with my DHM DP....Tubular manifold and Exhaust housing on my DHM kit. BEST IDEA EVER. Another plus...No wrapping shit. Also did my Entire Thermal R&D exhaust in Gold. Best exhaust idea EVER. still looks just like it was just done and i live in MN!

I'm in the process of doing the first things you mentioned and I was literally just asking myself maybe I should get the whoosh thermal exhaust I just got coated as well. I'm going to see how much Craig will charge me. Gold is sick by the way. I just went with black because he already was prepped to shoot someone else's parts in black.

Thank you I'm debating on doing the thermal exhaust I just got now. I'm not sure about a power difference yet and it's going to be a while. I'm in the process of a pretty much complete tear down and build up ATM and I'm taking my time.

They did an EXCELLENT job putting the satin black Cerakote on my CP-E exhaust tips, so I trust that the gold would be just as perfect. [wink] [thumb]

I'll be happy to post pictures. Its worth it just to see the weld porn on the airtec lol. So far i have been happy with them but I will report back once everything is finalized. I'll also post my report on the thermal difference before/after with underwood Temps and charge air Temps

yeah now that i know there's a local shop that does great work I'm starting to seriously consider going high-flow catted DP and catback and getting both coated since the price in my head was way off compared to the actual costs.

I used bonehead performance for my downpipe and manifold heatshield to go with whooshs ported and coated manifold. Their prices were surprisingly reasonable

I totally get having a DD and not able to wait a few weeks for parts to come back from coating. It you are considering going catless/ high flow catted downpipe i must encourage you to do it. One the factory downpipe well look a little crusty after a few years of service. Secondly it's crazy how much reducing back pressure and having a low restriction exhaust will help these turbo cars. It's true for NA motors but even more so for boosted application. The factory DP is a pretty big restriction and the cat even more so

I have an extra stock DP if you want it to get coated. I’d suggest using an aftermarket DP though, whether catted or catless. When’s the big turbo install?

I understand the daily driver and money struggle. If I was you I'd just save up your money, buy the whoosh v3 hi flow cat, then at least send that and your manifold out for coating (My guy had my stuff back to me within a week), then do your install. You'll still be able to daily your car while you wait for your items to be coated and you'll have a much better setup then a stock dp with your big turbo. I understand waiting sucks. I've had an s280 brand new in the box from whoosh for about 6 months now due too the curse of while I'm in there I may as well change this too🤣.
