Temp got up to 28 degrees. Car literally started in my driveway. Repair guy hasnt picked up the car yet. Could be moisture in the starter, could be a dead spot. Started and shut it down a few times and every time it fired up. Still gonna have him replace it.

It knows! So it will run perfect until the repair guy leaves.

I guess I have been lucky with my '14 and 52k miles.
I have the original battery that came with the car when I bought it.
You're in Cali, so only the extreme heat would kill it, and cranking/starting is EASY there.
I will bet that you do not listen to the sound system with the engine not running as well.

My Motorcraft might have made it past 3 years old IF I was not guilty of that second sentence above too often, and did not overcharge it trying to get it to last until Odyssey released their AGM in our size (stupidly, I was paying attention to that effing 'green eye' BS, and charged it too much whenever the eye went dark, putting the final nail in it's coffin by cooking it). [:(]

My problem now is that I must go out and start it once a week.
I put on less than 2k miles in the last year.

Ok so the guy got spooked form the only vid he found for doing the starter. ( they pull so much off the car and its unnecessary)

Figured id ask to be sure. But has anyone replaced the starter on these cars before? Was it as easy as pulling the intake, symposer, and cold side pipe? Id like to remove as little as possible while still having an easy time of it.

No lol... It's pretty shoved in there. You could do remove those if you added the removal of the front crash bar and radiator assembly but otherwise you have literally no clearance to get it out. The bolts are also really hard to get to because they are buried under the main wiring harness. Also I guess you could try removing the intake manifold altogether instead of the crash bar but make sure you tape up the inlets. You don't want anything falling in there. But you'll still have to drain some coolant and undo the coolant hose over the starter.

Also, on my car I also got the dreaded one click start. I'm gonna tell you what I wish someone told me, check your grounds. It may not be a bad starter. In my case it was a ground literally behind the starter that connects to the engine block. The starter also has one coming off of it but if the ground for the main harness isn't plugged up car will give power but no start. There are also 2 ground on the front of the block by the head. Have you checked your battery ground?

Only thing i haven't done is get under the car. There should be a way to do this without losing coolant or pulling the intake manifold off.

Does anyone have pics of the grounds near the starter? Im wondering if that dude forgot a nut or bolt and that's why its an intermittent no start.

If no one else has one, I'll grab some pics when I get home.

Here's atleast a pic of the starter with the front of the car off. Don't have one close enough to show the wires.

Thanks i can at least check and clean those spots. Clutch switch is in good order. If i have to pull the IM can it be done with the alternator untouched besides removing wiring?

I don't see why not. I think I've seen a YouTube video of two guys uninstalling one and they took out the alternator. If I remember correctly they still needed to take out the intake manifold after the fact. See the throttle body blocks you being able to remove the starter gear from the tranny as well as being able to disconnect the starter terminals. Like taking out the alternator for them helped them get to the terminals but when they tried to get the thing out it got stuck. I'm surprised noones chimed in with what the service manual says.

I saw the same vid. They left the cold side charge pipe bolted up. Which looks it it totally got in the way.

As for service manual... I might be one of the first to actually replace the starter out of necessity in the driveway. ( iirc they pulled it to do a timing belt)

Ok new battery, new starter as of last weekend. Cleaned terminals and grounds. Car still decides when it wants to start first push of the button. This is gonna be annoying as shit. Now i gotta dig deeper. Im gonna replace the clutch switch, and the start button. Guess i should replace every relay and fuse relating to the starting system. Idk whats up but its aggravating
