Loud idling/clacking noise

Hey guys, I noticed my 2015 ST idles pretty loud.... The video below is what it sounds like when the engine is warm. (not my video, but sound is identical) The chirping sound seems goes away if I give a bit of throttle. (bump the rpms to a 1000) I'm assuming that's just the DI. The clacking sound is what worries me more. I've searched around and didn't find a definitive yes or no.

Thanks!

Even the clacking noise? The DI obviously makes a chirp sound, but the "clacking" noise sounds a bit goofy to me. *Shrug* I've heard these engines are pretty loud at idle though.

It drives fine and everything. On a side note, does anyone happen to know if the 15s have an updated RMM? The first to 2nd shift can be pretty harsh even if I'm shifting at like 10mph. (unless you slip the clutch or wait for the revs to come down to like 1500 for it to be smooth) I'm wondering if it's just me or if maybe a RMM is worth investing in? The cobb one seems the best and is easy enough to install. I'd hate to void my warranty though... The dealer I bought from seems pretty mod friendly...

Other than that, loving the car. This my first brand new car and my first manual so I'm a bit paranoid. The first few days of ownership were not pretty. After only a week though, I feel like I've been driving one for a while now. Feels a lot more natural. [rockon] Even getting rev matching downshifts down decently well. (Mostly doing this to figure out how to smoothly shift into a lower gear when slowing down for a light and it turns green). Otherwise, I just put it in neutral and use the brakes. TLDR becuz racecar

Thanks!

There has never been any reference to the Roll Restrictor (I hate RMM) being changed for the '15.
I also can not see how changing that part could possibly affect anything about your warranty.

As for the noise that you hear.
Lift the hood and remove the plastic engine cover.
With the engine running now you will really hear the DI.
If this IS the sound you are complaining about, it IS normal.

The ST's are my third/fourth DI cars, and the previous have all sounded the same. You get used to it, mostly, though they sound like little diesel engines at idle. As for the RMM, it doesn't void your warranty so you really shouldn't have to worry about it. I have the Cobb unit and like the compromise between added stiffness and minimal vibration.

As for the rev-matching, there's no real need to do it outside of your learning. Modern transmissions have synchro's that 'rev match' the transmission for us, so outside of trying to assist in keeping the car balanced on the track there's no real 'need' for us to do it. Keeping the vehicle in-gear while slowing down, downshifting accordingly, not only keeps the car in a safe gear to accelerate in (in case of accident avoidance) but will also assist in fuel mileage by cutting fuel while decelerating in gear.

I appreciate the response. Yeah, I figure it's worth learning though. In my mind, there is no reason to get a manual if you aren't going to learn how to drive it to the fullest. It's more a challenge for me and knowing I can do a smooth downshift if need me gives me some peace of mind. :) Plus, I would like to get into track days and what not in the future. Syncros won't last long without rev matching :D

If it will help you sleep at night here's a video of my 2015 FiST. I do a close up of the engine. This is with 40 miles on the odometer. Did the 2014 FiST have the abmiant lighting too? I don't remember having lighting on my 2014 FiST.

Thanks for the video! I like how you matched the color of the lighting with your ST. I wish the lights were a bit brighter/adjustable. Certain colors like red and dark blue are super dim. Green envy is a cool color, I wish it would have been a bit darker though. It's too light for my taste in direct sunlight. Also, why the heck is there no gray for this car? The magnetic color of for the FOST would look really nice on the fiesta.

I love this forum, everyone is super helpful.

Thanks guys!

I don’t think the 15s have an updated RMM. I switched my RMM last weekend for a COBB and the OEM part appeared to be about a soft as what is shown on the Youtube install video. My cars build date is mid January of this year.

the 15 didn't get an updated RMM to my knowledge. The cobb one is a great piece especially for daily driving. It was my first modification to the vehicle after some engine slamming when I took it to the drag. That 1st to second gear shift is murder on the stock unit.

I just ran into this issue,
cleaned my valves then started hearing this noise
was soo worried i did something wrong.
Took it to ford and one of the techs said its just the cams tapping/ activating the fuel injectors
Scanner said all the data looked ace

people say i worry too much, however id rather identify whats worrying me vs shrugging it off and it causeing some HUGE damage

Your post helped me,
this page is amazing

Tesco, do yourself a favour and stay safe. Do NOT roll to a stop in neutral, you don't have complete control over the car and should the need arise to get out of trouble in a hurry, you have to find a gear. You might thank me one day!
