That won't deter someone with the means to afford an 60k Suv. Some poor soul trying to get to work and back in a 98 Cavalier might take heed though.

I think everyone should read the Car and Driver column from last month that said "The customer is always right.....and you are not the customer." The vast majority of cars in the US are chosen from dealer inventory. The dealers order what they think will sell and make the most profit for them. And it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. One year they say, "sedan and coupe sales were down 3% this year. Let's not order as many of them next year," and so the next year people see fewer sedans and coupes and more crossovers and SUV's. And that year sedan and coupe sales are down another 10%. And so on.
Dealers don't drive the market, the market drives the dealers. The car market is the US has been on a decline for years and all three majors are making the same decision, cars are getting dumped by Ford, GM and FCA. So when you buy a car you go to a dealer and buy what they want to sell you? Did you want an F150 when you bought your FiST? I don't know what kind of idiot buys what the dealer wants to sell you. I have always bought what I want, sometimes before the internet it meant spending countless hours being conned over the phone that they have exactly what you want only to get there and the V8 Blue Mustang with a 5 speed I wanted just "sold" and transferred to a different dealer BUT they have a red V6 auto they can hook me up with. A good Dealer today stocks whats sells not what they personally want to sell. They know many people will look online at their inventory if they are looking for a specific car not just any car. Good way to go bankrupt, I don't do trucks or SUV's and I sure as hell don't buy what a dealer wants to sell me! To me going to the "Build and Price" site you can build what you want then search inventory for hundreds of miles to see who has one is just so easy. I very seldom buy a new car locally, I go where the car I want is if they meet my price on the internet first.

If most people could afford a 60k vehicle, dealers wouldn't be offering financing for 84 months. I wonder if there's an auto loan bubble forming that will burst if the economy tanks.

Now that I think about it, we should just abolish car dealers and start buying direct from manufacturers.
And who is going to maintain/service your car. You going to make Ford buy and run all the dealers???

There are independent shops that can maintain your vehicle. Look at Tesla, they sell their cars directly to consumers, but they certify contractors to install the car chargers. The car companies could do the same thing, issue certifications (if at all) to repair shops.

I've never had my car maintained or serviced by a dealer, all my cars have been bought used and I either did it myself or paid a trusted local repair shop.

There are many states Tesla cannot sell cars by state laws. And who is going to order a car without looking at it and driving it? Reality is car dealers are going nowhere, the makers want nothing to do with sales. Plus the new car dealers lobbyists are very, very strong (ask Tesla!) and is why you have to have a service facility or you can't sell new cars in many states. So no laws will be changed and the makers can afford to buy all the votes needed to stop any attempt at that insanity. Many smaller companies will just walk away.........

There are over 7 million vehicle loans in default that equals 90 days or more.
The majority of financial experts at least the ones I listen to would say we have a huge problem with auto loans.
Unfortunately people don't want to pull their head out of their ass and listen.
That's okay though I just look at my bank account and laugh at them.

Iā€™m not entirely convinced that the Mk8 is better for me. If you like a bigger touch screen, more driver modes, and cylinder deactivation with a 3 cylinder engine. I guess Iā€™m old fashioned, but to me that seems like more unnecessary tech. I prefer just pushing 1 button to put traction control in sport mode. And I could always get a LSD installed later.

Proof that traditional media still works
Even when it's not totally right. The article implied, as had most every news story I had seen, that the Fiesta was already gone and the Mustang was the only car available at Ford dealers. So I decided, out of curiosity to see whether used Fiesta ST's were on the market and found that new ones were still available, and with a $3000 rebate.

You, however, are not one of the mass millions who buy cars in America. You are an enthusiast. The masses go to the dealer and buy out of what they see. The majority have no strong preconceived idea which car they want, except maybe that they like what their friend or neighbor has. So they go to the dealer and look. That's why dealerships have filled their showrooms that used to be full of cars with cubicles full of salesmen, eager to guide the buyer to what will make them the most money.

I really do not understand why all (most) of you are crapping on Ford about this. Sure it sucks but it is almost certainly due to product demand. Taking into consideration transport cost and parts/warranty support Ford loses money on the Fiesta in the states. Does anyone here HONESTLY expect Ford to LOSE money just so they can sell 4K~ FiSTs a year??

And to address the idea that Ford "dumps" on their customers.... they are no better or worse than any other car brand. Hell, if you consider the Octane Academy and the HUGE amount of Mustang customer interaction then I would argue they are better than most brands (when it comes to enthusiasts).

Also, whether you like it or not (and I know most of you don't), the Edge/Explorer STs are geared to what the AMERICAN market wants.
I agree. I wanted an ST and I bought one. Got a standard deal but got what I wanted. But here in Arizona, where most vehicles are pickups or Jeeps, none of the Fiestas sell. In Chicago, where I used to live, little cars were very practical (parking, anyone?), but still, my 2014 Fiesta was a one-off, as was my Honda Fit before that. The preferred rides? SUVs. Not so many Suburban-sized ones (except for Escalades or Range Rovers) but plenty of 4-door Jeep Wranglers.

So what choice does Ford have? I hadn't tought about the parts/warranty issue but it's huge. I was about to get new plugs for my 2014 Fiesta (3-cyl) but they had to be ordered. Nothing for these cars is in stock unless it's also used on another vehicle.

So if you want an ST, hurry and buy one. Or get one used. I think my ST will hold its value better than anything I've ever owned. And I'm 73.
